Post by AlanS »

2013 S60. Wife just came home with this message : High engine temp...see manual. What do I do? this happened last summer when the temps were high and a/c was on. What is the process at this point?

Read codes and post them here. Check coolant level, look for leaks under the reservoir, etc. and on the garage floor or driveway.

Your S60 has no temp gauge, just this warning. You can get an ODB connector and an Android phone with an app like https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... obdandroid , https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... ent.v_tool and monitor it that way.

This is very concerning because this is one of those things that can kill an engine within minutes.

Great suggestions by Matthew. I would ask for more info. Any recent work was done to the engine? Any new sensors especially aftermarket? How many miles on the car? What were the conditions when this message appeared(rain, hot Arizona day, etc). Look at your radiator pack. If they are full of bugs, dirt, it will significantly cut your cooling ability.
It would be best to have at least basic scanner able to show you engine coolant temp. If you are eager to try something and not willing to spend time investigating- confirm radiator fins are clean, if not clean the best you can(compressed air, water under gentle pressure, vacuum, of course best results with radiator removed, watch some YouTube on this). Replace thermostat with oem(dont cheap out, buy oem, not o.e ), replace coolant. From the fact that message was there last year(as you mentioned) and no information about what was done to correct the issue last year, logical conclusion- you ignored the problem vs were forced to close your eyes on it(kids, work, money, health...).

76,000 miles on this car. No work done since we noticed the message last summer. It did not pop up all fall or winter. Running the car, radiator fan is spinning when A/C is on. Last week the only codes I read were : P151B68 (idle speed control- RPM lower than expected), P261086 (ECMPCM Internal engine off time performance Bus Signal/ Message Failure. Signal invalid, and U300716 - U300616, Control Module Input Power B Circuit voltage below threshold.

I will check again today, as the message went off since I last checked for codes. Does any of the above concern you?

So you have the scanner. Hopefully it is one that can show engine temp as well. I would ignore all the above codes and just erase them for now. My suggestion still stands- check if radiators are clean and able to "breath" easily. If not-clean. Start the car and monitor the engine temp. Turn off A/c and see at what temp the fan will kick in. If you never changed your coolant- it might as well be great idea to replace coolant and thermostat at the same time. You are due to replace timming belt if not done prior(10 years or 100-115k depending who you ask)

Check the cooling fan for the radiator is running. The fan control unit fails on P3 cars.

Or use 850 OBDII which is authored by none other than MVS member @xanthefin

Sorry xan, forgot about your app until I was reminded via that ^ thread popping up in the feed!

This is how I'd approach this. I'd monitor the temp via an app as I drove, idled, AC on, AC off, etc. I'd write it down to build a picture of how the engine is behaving and that would give a huge direction to go in to troubleshoot this. Those codes are not all that helpful IMHO.

Hi! I am not taking rivalry. Its just hobby project with own extra touch.

P.S. P3 models not yet in my App due protocol did change but i did once visit inside one to take lessons so that i can soon write support for them in Volvo protocol too. Though P80, P1, P2 (all years) supported on my side
