The fuel pump relay supplies the power to the injectors and the fuel pump which is why volvo calls it the main relay. You can get one for $20 or so at fcpgroton and I am thinking this is your problem, although it could also be your fuel injection 25 amp fuze on the drivers inside fender (in white plastic holder) One other possibility it the electrical part of your ignition switch (they are known to go bad, I have had several go bad in 300,000 miles or so of volvo experience. you should have power to one side of coil with switch on and your speedo needle should jump a little when you first crank. Hope this helps you.

Thank you for the info. I ordered a new fuel pump relay. The one thats on the car is less than a year old. I appreciate the low price supplier you mentioned as the last relay was $50.
The fuse is OK and coil had power as required.
My speedo needle hasn't moved for a couple years. I might fix if I get the car moving again.

I was thinking some more about this. Since you have power to coil you should have spark. If hall pickup in distrubutor is bad then ecu gets no signal = no spark and it will not ground fuel pump relay so you get no fuel as well. I am not sure of this but I think this is how it works. So there is another thing to check. Wires going to distrubutor power, ground, and signal. you can check power and ground with key on, to test signal you need logic probe and you should get pulse when cranking (0, 5v, 0, 5v, etc)

That clears up some confusion I had about the operation of the hall sensor. This will help when I get out this weekend to try to zero in on the problem. Thanks for your help.

The fuel pump relay came in the mail today and it was a big help. I have a strong spark now. I don't understand how the relay is related to spark. Maybe it was unrelated and I had a loose connection that was corrected while troubleshooting.

The new relay provides power to the pumps when I turn the key. I think my main fuel pump is bad. It sounds like it stops every few seconds. The car sounds like it ignites on one or two cylinders. I can get the car to run for a few seconds if i whack the pump with a wrench. Not sure but I would imagine a failing pump could be the reason the relay failed.

My current plan is to hit the U-pull-it in the morning. They said the pump is $23 if they have it. I was trying to talk myself into buying new after market main pump, but then if I spend the $ on that I would want to buy a new transfer pump for insurance and I can't put that much of an investment in this vehicle. Thanks for all your help with this.

I like used parts too. I bought two air mass sensors for $20 each from www.car-part.com (nationwide collection of recyclers) Go to the page with the asterisk for the lowest priced part.

Fixed:
When I had the main pump off I could hear problems with transfer pump. I ended up adding a used main-pump, new transfer pump, fuel filter and in tank strainer. I went with a new vs. used transfer pump because this pump was a real pain to remove. After everything was installed I ran the pump by jumping the pump relay for a few seconds to build up pressure. When I turned the key it fired right up.
I bet the transfer pump failed which caused the main pump to fail which maybe was the reason the pump relay failed. Anyway, it's running now.
I really appreciate all the helpful comments.
