Hard time to get Volvo S60 running again..

Post by pveeningen »

Hello everyone!

Like the title is saying.. I am having a hard time to get an Volvo S60 2.4 Turbo with 200hp running again.

The problem was that the only key has been burned by fire in a different car which we had an accident with. So the transponder was melted.. The keyblade was still intact.
So i first tried to program a new key on the CEM module ( I have a lot of tools like programmers etc ) but after desoldering the flash from the CEM module, there was that brown epoxy on the chip which not let me read the chip, so i wanted to scrape the epoxy from the chip, and 1 pin was broken from the chip!!

So plan B, i went to the scrapyard, and picked a complete kit from a car, so ecu, tcu, cem, ignition coil ring, key, and cluster but they all had different partnumbers..
I cutted a new key, and putted the new transponder in the key, so no immobilisation. The car was cranking, but not starting. So i think that there is some different in the flash of the ecu, but i am not sure..

Is there any information about immo in the flash of the ecu? The ecu is an ME7.0.1
Otherwise i could try to transfer the flash from the ORI ecu to the DONOR ecu, and hopefully it would start again..

Or does anybody maybe have another input in this story??

Thank you already for reading and taking time to answer!! :D

I'll give you a rundown on what I just went through with my 06 S60 and what it took to get running again.

First thing, My 0S S60 T5 is titled as an abandoned car. Possibly the previously owner died and they couldn't find the keys. Someone had a Valet key made and that's all I have had for the last six months or so.

Around March, I had trouble starting the car, but it would always start. Then one day it wouldn't start.

I found a YouTube video showing how this happened to another Volvo and this is what he said to do.
With the Key only.
Lock and unlock the car with the key.

Then get in the car, shut the door and turn the ignition on and completely off 5 times, then start the car.
After trying to start my car for days, it started right up. "Supposedly" this reacquaints the key with the ECM.

It worked perfect for days and I took it over to my local Volvo guys for other work.
They were tracing down a fault with a check engine light and decided to get another ECM and have mine flashed over. After getting the re-flashed ECM back, the car never started again. It was a big ordeal with my ECM going to different shops and eventually I had it towed to a Volvo dealer.
They too spent hours trying to figure it out, and finally hooked it into the Big Volvo computer at headquarters.

They reprogramed my "newer used" ECU and said that NEW keys Had to be programed to the car. After that......it started and my check engine light is gone.

My original Valet key was "dead", but they reprogramed it to the new key designation. Now it works.

So, my ECM I think was the original cause of my check engine light that the ECM couldn't see the O2 sensor and then it had trouble recognizing the key months later. My T5's ECM was reprogramed at some point by another owner to give extra power. Now it drives like a normal T5. Before it was crazy with the boost, now it more sane for my 70 year old driving style.

From what I learned, Volvo has a lot of safeguards in their computer systems to try to keep people from stealing the cars. That process of on and off with the key worked, but when my ECM was pulled out to be re -flashed, it never started again.

As jonesg said above the rear view mirror is important. It has the remote control's interface to the vehicle. The transponder ring is just a communication relay to the CEM. Go back t the junkyard and get the matching rear view mirror. If that doesn't work call the guys in California at the link jonesg also provided. They have programmed three cars for me and two for friends with new keys.

The original CEM's flash is fisically broken.. 1 leg from the chip is gone. So restoring the old CEM is no option in this situation..

The things i really like to know is.. Can i just transfer the flash from the ecu from one to another, (with different SW versions)
So the old flash, which the car ran with, to the new ecu..
Or is there also immo related information in the flash of the ME7.0.1 ecu?

And about the rear view mirror, from what i have read are only the key remotes programmed in it.
I doubt that the rear view mirror is also immo related. Correct me if i am wrong....

I read up on the UEM in the mirror.... .
The mirror is the remote-control receiver for the car and contains a lot of electronics
It is coded to the vehicle, and another mirror assembly cannot be used from another car.
You swapped the ECM , the original mirror is no longer talking the same language to the ecm.

Pretty sure a good tech could fix that broken leg on the CEM chip.
Remove some plastic and solder a jumper wire.
