2009 XC90 AWD 3.2 Parking Brake

Post by rp2005 »

My parking brake appears to be stuck. I am trying to replace the starter motor and need to be able to roll the car forward on some car ramps to get under the car. Am I missing something?

I had the vehicle towed to my house and the tow truck driver had no problem backing the car into the spot (I noticed that the reverse lights lit up when he was getting off his flat bed which I thought was odd). He applied the parking brake and I gave him a thumbs up not thinking anything of it. Later, when I went to try to push the car, I released the parking brake but was not able to move it easily when I shifted into neutral. Is there something I am missing?

I have the Volvo VIDA software so I started looking at adjusting the parking brake. We never use it so I was just trying to loosen it as much as possible. I pulled the clip out successfully and turned it clockwise until the adjustment mechanism was completely loose and the car still won't move in neutral. I feel like I am missing something.

Any help would be much appreciated!

1. Assure that parking brake is disengaged(redundant, but...)
2. Place car in park, apply anti-roll wheel checks on opposite ends(safety first).
3. Jack each rear wheel one at a time and verify you are able to move them a little back and forth. Crazy idea is that-since you never used your parking brake, rust formed inside the rear caliper brake pad slidding groves. You engaged parking brake and pads were moved above normal range which made them get locked on rust. You want to verify that wheel has some movement and not being held tight with brake pads. In case you will discover no movement from one(two) wheels-remove wheel, open caliper, remove pads and clean caliper&pads so they move freely.
4. Sorry, but you are probably way stronger than me. I could not imagine being able to push Geo Metro on ramps, XC70 with all its weight would be totally out of my league. I would suggest to jack up front wheels one at a time and apply ramps under. This way you dont have to push it anywhere and able to work right there. (Hopefully surface underneath is supportive of such idea). Parking, parking brake on, anti-roll shocks applied as always, jack stands for safety or alternative(wood, wheels, anything you feel secure trusting your life and health).
