I wanted to run this issue by the forum before I spring for a new fuel pump.
My car needs to crank for several seconds before it starts.....probably twice as long as my '03 would crank. If I release the starter before it starts, I would then have to crank it for an unusually long time again to start it. It has never failed to start ever but I have occasionally got the "Reduced Engine Performance" message between attempts that goes away right away when it starts. There is no CEL coincident with this odd starting.
Today I hooked up a fuel pressure gauge and went through the start routine. I put the key is in position 2 for 5 seconds......no pressure, shut key off, do it again.......3 psi, shut key off, do it again........8 psi, shut key off, do it again....14 psi, then go to position 3 and start it and the pressure goes to 55 or so and settles back to about 45 and is stable. Car runs and idles great, has never stalled, seems to be normal once it starts, its just that it doesn't seem normal on the start.
I cannot find any info on how much pressure the pump should develop in key position 2, can anyone provide any guidance on this?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys, scot850 had suggested the same regarding a valve incorporated into the pump on '05?-'07 models that can sometimes be faulty. From what I've read I believe this to be the problem now, pump ordered!

Changed the pump today with a Bosch unit from RockAuto. Low priming pressure is gone now so starts are much better! Pretty easy job for the shade tree mechanic, the biggest part of the job is removing the back seat and containing the fuel from dripping on the carpet, didn't get very lucky with that so now the car will sit outside with the windows all down for a few days. Pump was $271 compared to $730 from our local Dealership and was made in Hungary or Slovenia I think so it should be good.

Glad to hear the new pump fixed the issue. Shame that is a similar issue you had with your 03 XC70.
