Begun work on the tailgate, angle grinder and steel brush to start with. First step is to get as much rust as possible away.

I wouldn't mind a hint on how to remove the plastic trim. I got the 4 nuts remove from the inside and it's loose but there are two linkages from the locking mechanism still holding it in place, not sure how I get them off. Do I need to remove the lower latch?

For good painting results, do much more surface preparation than you think you need.
But you knew that already.

Yeah I got the linkages and the trim off, plan is to take it down to bare metal, phosphoric acid treatment and prime it with 2k epoxy. Going need some 24 grit discs here. 40 ain't cutting it!

edit:
Sigh!!!! Tailgate closed on me and now I can't open it. The interior release latch doesn't seem to be doing anything either.

edit 2: Open, thankfully I had all the trim off so once I crawled into the back I could remove the lever and open the latch by depressing the linkage that was loose

Moved it out of the street a day or two ago. I was planning on starting the work I've been putting off all summer.... SAS system, oil change, plugs, washing the engine, and installing undershields. New plan is to start all that tomorrow.

Today, I took a look at a 2003 XC70 that seemed to be in pretty good shape. The only things that stood out to me, as negative were some paint scratches, and a vibrating blower motor. Oh, also a "message" that I didn't understand.... could be about the rear fog that didn't seem to want to turn off. Minor stuff, so I will be watching it, on auction day. I'll probably be visiting the P2 forum later tonight.

Got Evita inspected, garage called me to tell me the fuel filter job was a rust rabbit hole. , so I skipped that. No emissions on her 27 year old exempt body! Put the Curt hitch on the 2013 xc90, midway through job got bad vertigo from the rolling around. Under. Had to stop , hope I can get her done in morning

I stripped and primed the tailgate. Ground off most of the paint using a 24 grit sanding disc.

Image

I had the whole tailgate brushed with phosphoric acid jelly then I wrapped it in plastic wrap for a couple of hours, before a wash and final sanding and priming. Rolled it on:

Image

I'll probably need to do some fiberglass filler work before I can put down spray filler over the rest. Covering the car to protect it from over spray.

Image

I also removed the rear bumper again to look at my homemade bumper brackets. The paint had not stuck very well to them, makes sense since I did not rough up the surface. I'm going over them with the 24 grit and using up my remaining epoxy before it sets in the pot.

Image

Good enough, I'll hose it down with some thick rust protection once it's cured and we'll have another look next year.
