Regarding draining the fuel; I found it was easy by just removing the valve core in the Shrader valve on the fuel rail, slipping on a piece of rubber hose, and then just turning on the key to pump out the fuel.

Another way to drain the tank is a hand operated fluid transfer pump with a hose down the filler neck. That way the filter isn't getting gummed up if there is any debris.

I agree. Really old fuel should not be pumped with fuel pump through the filter. Better to pump out or drain another way and maybe save the pump.
I would not consider 3 years really old unless it is alcohol blend.

im less familiar with this engine than the old redblocks.

I wondered if it is an interference engine , it is !

in an interference engine, if the timing belt breaks it will cause pistons and valves to crash, so for that reason I'd verify the age of the timing belt and if you do not know, Id siuggest you replace it.

on the old redblocks they just roll to the side of the road and stop running if this happens. and it takes about an hour to change it at the roadside if you have a few tools, I toss the old one in the trunk with my spare just in case. its not heavy.

also if you wanted to drain the fuel you might be able to undo the fuel line where it connects tot trh fuel rail and install a jumper in place of the fuel pump relay. Im not sure how different the relay is but I made one up out of an old relay, I just gutted it and added a fuse, when plugged in the pumps both run.

Id be very cautious as the fuel pump can move a lot of fuel fast and you dont want a spil or an engine fire. Id just use a small cgas can and do a gallon or so at a time, maybe have someone handy to disconnect he battery if it shoudl overflow..

had a friend he drained a tank into a bucket, then he tripped on his toruble light and the bulb broke and it caused a horrible and his face is now very scarrd.

Be very careful abotu open fuel Id put a decent fire extinguisher nearby before you go opening fuel lines and do it outside not in the garage. a spark at the battery terminan is enough to light it off so maybe there is a safer way , anyway be careful and think beforee you begin.

if you dont think the gas seems bad you might just run it out..

if you store a car add some fuel conditoner to a jerry can give it a shake and dump it in it helps with fuel storage.

Fun story. My 2005 xc90 has the 5 cylinder turbo interference engine. My timing belt broke while idling in traffic. I spent a month cranking the engine trying to diagnose the problem. I didnt know yhe best was broken at that time. Long story short I assumed valves were bent and pulled the head. I sent it to a machine shop who told me the valves were fine and just needed new seals and cleaning. If I had thrown a new belt on I probably could have avoided the rebuild altogether. So before you rebuild, just try a new belt and turn it over by hand. You might get lucky.

Compression test tells the details of a valve crash.

exactly 3.14/100ths of a time, the engine is ok and just needs a new belt.

I guesss not too hard to j turn it by hand and verify if the cam is moving.

in many cars neglecting to change the belt when it is an intererence engine has caused serious engine damage. I dont know about the frequency of that happening for this particular engine.

It is more frequent than it should be, mainly as D#@BA$$ cheap owners who think the belt last for ever. There are a few where bad luck happens like Abscate had happen to him when an idler failed not long after replacement. But that is not a common issue.

Good Luck!
