1999 s80 t6 Knocks and loss of power

i am looking at a 99 s80 T6 as a project car, the car has 127k on it and is in very good condition except it knocks and doesn't have much power, also some smoke, the knock is mostly heard thru the exhaust, not from the engine bay? the guy is asking $2000 for the car and I am pretty sure I can get it for $1500. I don't believe their are any lights on but the car is not drivable. I have heard these cars can skip timing or timing can be off, my concern is what is the likely hood of Major engine damage? or any thoughts?? I have not personaly driven the car Yet, so is their anything I can check to determine if this is a "simple' T-belt fix?

Avoid any '99 S80, especially with those problems. The guy couldn't give one away to me- I wouldn't take it. Just to many problems with that model year, with or without the problems just mentioned.

how about the 2000? I also found a 2000 for sale? I understand the s80's are a problem car, but I kind of like the styling and size of the s80,and I am looking for a replaement for my 94 Saab Aero. Plus I like a project so not affraid of the work for a nice car! although I do not want tranny problems. I would preffer a car I can get good diagnostic SW for though

A 2000 is better than a '99 for sure but still has some problems. The newer on the S80 the better.
