1996 Volvo 850 N/A Wagon, Complete Records + Parts, $1600 OBO, NC

This 1996 Volvo 850 Estate in Regent Red Metallic with a black/grey cloth interior is a fine working example of the type. It is my favorite car: endlessly useful, incredibly resilient, and surprisingly modern. I am the third owner; the car comes with complete service records. I have maintained it for 11 years. Utility and reliability have been more important to me than cosmetics.

This is a running, driving car that I still use locally. I am leaving the country this spring so I must sell. You get the car, its records, all the parts I have accumulated, and the satisfaction of driving a living legend. Perhaps most interesting to someone who already knows these cars, but I will entertain all offers. Below is excessive detail, but hey it’s a Volvo forum:
  • 296,400* miles on the original naturally-aspirated 2.4L five-cylinder engine and 4-speed automatic transmission.
  • Still capable of ~21mpg city, 27mpg highway.
  • 15” alloy wheels + a full-size spare on same (“Cetus” rims)
  • “Cold Weather Package” including heated front seats (not working) and rubber mats
  • Fog lights (front and rear)
  • Cruise control (working)
  • Power locks (working)
  • Power mirrors (working) with independent toggles
  • Power windows (working) with driver’s window auto-down.
  • Power driver’s seat (works, but not the memory system)
  • First-gen SIPS airbags
  • First year of OBDII, good for diagnostics
  • Exterior is Regent Red Metallic (paint #418). Paint is original & pretty worn in spots (roof has no clear coat left) except for hood and front quarter panels which were replaced & resprayed to match in 2017.
  • Interior has black plastic trim with grey or graphite plush seats. Driver’s seat recovered in vintage VW fabric 2018. Door cards and center console recovered in 2025.
  • AM/FM/CD/Cassette radio (SC-816 from a ’98 V70). CD player worked for years but recently stopped. Tape deck works. I will include a cassette adapter + Lightning and USB-C adapters. I will also include a spare SC-816 that might have a working CD player.
  • Complete service records in an accordion file, including original window sticker and brochure, purchase paperwork, the works. Also an Excel spreadsheet tracking the same service history (happy to share this with potential buyers in advance).
  • Low rust; car was registered in Colorado for 18 years and has been registered in North Carolina since. Minimal salt exposure.
  • Clean NC title in hand.
*Mileage is approximate but advanced upwards to reflect true distance. Analog odometer gear has been broken at least twice for periods of time and occasionally the number stack gets stuck (it’s not the drive gear). During broken-gear outages I tracked distance with the digital trip computer + fuel records and manually advanced the odometer to match each time I repaired it.

Mods from stock:
  • Throttle plate from a 960, same brass part but without the plastic limiter the 850s have.
  • IPD Rear Overload Springs (OEM springs also included)
  • Roof rails + windshield trim from a ’98 V70 Cross Country (beefier than the Euro Rails)
  • Semi-rare OEM rear hitch (Volvo #9134257) bought used in Virginia but somehow the Euro part? Receiver is a non-standard Euro size and didn’t come with a tow ball. Tow lights not spliced in (they land in spare tire well) + would require an exterior adapter to connect North American trailers, But it is an incredibly solid, factory-engineered part.
  • Steering wheel replaced with a rare full-leather example from a junkyard GLT. Original airbag carefully swapped.
  • D-pillar speakers from a junkyard GLT.
  • Swapped clock + temperature display for a full trip computer from a ’99 V70. Added “Info” dash switch. Now you can select avg/instant MPG readout, distance-to-empty, temperature, or a separate digital trip counter (useful when the odometer sticks).
  • Windshield wiper fluid nozzles swapped for improved part from ’98-’00 V70 (sprays a fine mist instead of a concentrated stream), also added a check valve
  • Stock donut replaced with a full-size spare wheel + tire
  • Airbox preheat hose removed & port covered
  • LED map lights and door lights.
  • Sun visors replaced with grey part from ’98-’00 V70s
  • New master key laser-cut by Volvo, used as template for locally laser-cut keys cut from Volvo blanks. Clean master key + at least two keys for use are included.
Notable mod parts I have but haven’t installed:
  • C70 subframe brace + the longer bolts required. Stalled out on wanting to replace my subframe bushings as part of this but never had the means to install those.
  • Rear spoiler for wagon + bracket pieces (Volvo #9124502), in faded green paint. Wanted to refinish, paint, and install. Never got to it.
Recent service:
  • Dec. 2025: New battery.
  • Oct. 2025: New windshield wiper blades, fabricated new door cards & upholstered with nice thrifted fabric, covered replacement center console rest in same.
  • Aug. 2025: Replaced odometer gear, refreshed instrument cluster lamps
  • Dec. 2024: New power steering pump + serpentine belt (old pump locked up & shredded the belt)
  • Jul. 2024: Rebuilt emergency brake system (cables, pads), 4-wheel alignment + 3 new tires, RH outer tie rod end
Major Flaws:
  • Burning oil: using more, sometimes smokes after idling. Probably the valve stem seals. So far only a major problem for sustained highway driving. 250 miles at >65mph seems to burn 300ml or more.
  • A/C compressor clutch: not engaging once the compressor warms up. I shimmed the clutch plate in 2024 and it was OK for a while but either the shims failed or it needs more. As a result, basically no A/C in summer. Will need a refrigerant top-up once the compressor is sorted (last recharge in ’21); fluorescent dye was used in last recharge so try UV to look for leaks.
  • Timing belt: Due now (last change was 9yrs/70,000mi ago)
  • Dashboard plastic: failing more and more. Dash is sagging & there is some noise when going over bumps. Not a crisis yet but not getting any better on its own.

Minor Flaws:
  • A/C recirculation actuator: motor dead. Can be replaced but it’s deep inside the dash… as a result, you get a mix of fresh and recirculated air. Not so bad.
  • Rear windshield washer fluid: inoperable. Could be the pump, could be a clog.
  • Right CV boot: torn but still functional. No clicking yet. Right wheel hub may also want to be replaced. Left axle, boot, & hub have been replaced.
  • Brakes and rotors: still serviceable, last done in 2015 at Sears (rip). Was told pads are still OK last time the car was on a lift.
  • Front lower spoiler/bumper cover: does not match, it’s a dark green junkyard part. I’m used to it, seems to blend in with the black bumper trim & complements the red paint.
  • Front lower air guide: missing. I have a new louver insert but not the big plastic pan.
  • Subframe dented long ago by rock impact. Does not affect drivability but impacts radiator support tab and A/C hoses drag low. Would also affect air guide fitment. Thought to replace subframe if replacing the bushings & adding the C70 brace.
  • Slow coolant loss, probably radiator/hoses as some of those are old and it doesn’t seem to be fouling the oil. Heater core OK, no leak to cabin.
  • Occasional P0410 code connected to the emissions air pump motor. Seasonal, I think it locks up in summer heat. Considered replacing motor or doing the ECU solder mod to eliminate this.
  • Passenger and tailgate key locks don’t work. Electronic door lock still works from central control & from driver’s door control. Fuel door key lock does not work.
  • Passenger door lock rod is stuck inside the door so doesn’t pop up and down.
  • Car has stock wireless lock/unlock, but no fob was included when I bought it. I bought a fob on Ebay, programmed it (tricky), and it worked for a few years. Now either the fob is dead or the receiver/alarm brain has a problem. Probably the used fob.
  • Glovebox door stops: they keep disconnecting (these take the weight of the “picnic tray” door when open).
  • Headlight wiper motors: removed for repairs. Got most of the way on one motor except the case is broken so I couldn’t seal it up.
  • Left the second motor sealed as a reference, in case I got stuck on rebuilding the first. Parts included.
  • Tailgate door interior trim: notoriously hard to keep attached. I removed it in frustration and ran the rear door with exposed metal for years. Last year I 3D-printed a receiver part that let me screw in the top of the panel but then the bottom clips wouldn’t stay in, despite using new parts (tiny clips cracked). This could be solved with 3D-printing or some kind of anchor screw I think. Happy to explain.
  • A/C control knobs have been failing, I’ve been 3D-printing replacements but also have some OEM replacements in my parts stash for reference.
  • Heated seats and mirrors don’t work, was nice when they did
  • Small trim piece missing on front left quarter panel
  • Numerous scratches, old sideswipe mark, no real dents
Quirks:
  • All four power windows go down from central controls. Rear left window only goes up from rear left door switch; you have to reach back. It does not go down from the door switch. Rear right door switch is fine.
  • My friends find the driver’s seatbelt latch is tricky to release. It takes a hard-to-describe firm push. I’m used to it and don’t struggle.
  • Recommend not using car washes with an underbody spray because sometimes the transmission gets confused afterwards (water-related short in the TPS). It will either enter limp-home mode or appear to enter limp-home mode but still shift. Clears when it dries out.
  • Occasional TPS glitch on very hot days (high 90s F), similar to above. Sometimes power-cycling fixes this. Sometimes you can just drive anyway.
  • Roof rail trim swapped from the ’98 V70 somehow concentrates water so that it drips into the driver’s window if open, and onto the arm/seat area when that door is opened.
Also includes:
  • Owner's manual and other paperwork
  • Several boxes of spare clips, switches, screws, bulbs, new and used plastic parts, a spare radio w/ code; the usual old-Volvo collection.
  • Remaining fabric from recent door-card restoration project
  • IPD serpentine belt removal tool
  • Breaker bar + tire iron
  • My friendly support, from a distance, if you want it.
This is a well-documented, daily-drivable 850. If you want a complete, affordable, honest example of these cars that you can actually use on day one, this may be the car for you. I will entertain partial trade offers that include a bicycle and would also sell for Bitcoin.

VIN and Excel maintenance history available on request.

Hi Austin, Jan 4, 2026. I read it all. I can see your history. Great! Takes a similar whack job like me to appreciate. I have original owner '95 940; '87 245 manual; '92 240; '93 240; original V70 2002. I've done the seat heaters twice and would put another Wagonmeister set into yours. I wouldn't touch the AC as i live in Maine. Glad the heater/blower works on yours. Given how beautiful the paint is I'd probably bother to strip/redo the roof clear coat. Regarding the V70 frame project never completed: do you have some pictures of how bad the Rock Smack was? And do you consider the oil leak, basically, the head gasket? I'm pretty sure you have tightened the Valve gasket esp. at the "smoking spot" right? What kind of bike are you looking for? Doesn't really make sense to ship a bike to Europe, though, does it? Or does your job/reason for going to Europe have some legit shipping allowance that makes sense to ship a good bike? I'd trade my road bike Trek from CA which is the only real valuable bicycle I own. Let's talk about this car you've obviously put a lot of work into. Doug Day, HPF Volvo Repair, Rockport, Maine Doug Day

Sold, for $1600, to a very motivated buyer not on this forum. He had been looking for this color and had almost given up hope.
