Just had my 96 960 with a 103K miles in for inspection and to my surprise the only thing that didn't pass was the backup lights.
Checked bulbs and voltage, both good. Is there a backup light switch or could this have to do with the PNP(What is the PNP)? Any assistance on possible problems or possible fixes would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
The back-up light switch is on the left side of the transmission. There may be a bad connection or the switch may not be working.
The PNP switch is the Park, Neutral Position switch which prevents the engine being started in any gear position except Park or Neutral.
Bill.

It most likely is the PNP switch, it also controls the reverse lights.
I'll bet if you put the key in the ignition, turn to on, don't start it, leave in the run position with the dash lights on, press the brake pedal, and row the gear selector back and forth about 20-30 times, thru the whole range. Bet those lights will come back on. Take this as a sign of a dying PNP switch, eventually it will refuse to start. The switch can be taken off and cleaned and re-lubricated with a high temp. grease.

The PNP switch is located at the bottom of the selector lever.
The back-up lights switch is on the left side of the transmission.
