Question about PTFE spray for Volvo S60 2001 throttle body

Post by Danielles60 »

Hi everyone,

I’m driving a 2001 Volvo S60 with the B5244S engine. I couldn’t find an existing topic about this specific model/year, so I hope it’s okay to post it here — my apologies if this is the wrong section.

A Volvo specialist told me that slow or sticky throttle response can sometimes be caused by the internal plastic gearing inside the throttle body getting dirty or running dry, rather than the throttle body itself being worn out. He suggested lightly lubricating the gear mechanism with a dry PTFE spray as a possible fix before replacing the whole unit.

I asked Copilot for input as well, and it recommended Kroon-Oil TefTec AS or WD‑40 Specialist Dry PTFE because both are dry, non‑sticky PTFE lubricants that are safe for plastic gears.
But I’d really like to hear from people with real-world experience.

Has anyone here tried this? Does it actually help as a temporary or long-term fix? And is TefTec AS indeed better than the regular Kroon-Oil Tefspray PTFE for this job?

For context:
While driving, the throttle pedal reacted with a slight delay, then went back to normal. Now the RPM hangs for about a second when I press the clutch. No warning messages appear on the dash, and diagnostics show no stored fault codes.

Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated — I’d rather try a sensible fix before spending €300+ on a new throttle body.

I have no experience with this problem or these products, but the logic of your idea seems right. I don't see a down side for you in trying this.

Hello, I would recommend finding a replacement throttle body while you are getting by with spray lube on the current throttle's hinge. The Marelli ETM has a bad track record for durability. Search for "Volvo ETM Failure." Try to find a throttle body with a hall effect sensor instead of the original thin film contact sensor. Volvo started rebuilding ETMs with these contactless sensors several years ago. Get Volvo part number 36050564 for the non-turbo engine version. There are also rebuilt electronic throttle bodies from XeMODeX (ad at the top of the page) and other rebuilders. I put rebuilt XeMODeX ETMs on both of the 2001 V70s in my collection. Try to find a 2001 or 2002 S60 or V70 non-turbo at an auto scrap yard or online.
