Hi everyone,
I’ve posted here a few times before and have always gotten solid help, so I’m back looking for a little more direction on an ongoing issue with my C70.
I’m still chasing down an oil/leak issue and hoping for some fresh ideas on where to look next.
When I first bought the car, after driving it and parking, I’d hear what sounded like the intercooler or turbo area “cooling off” or venting for several minutes after shutdown. That no longer happens, which may or may not be relevant, but it’s something I noticed has changed.
The car also has a kill switch installed by a previous owner. If I don’t use it, the battery will be dead by the next day. I know that points to a parasitic draw and I plan to track that down later, but it’s not my top priority right now.
More recently, I’ve noticed a liquid leaking under the car. Based on where it’s dripping, it looks like it’s coming from behind or near the turbo heat shield area. I can feel some oil residue around there, but from the top it’s hard to see exactly where it’s coming from. After driving, I also notice oil splatter on the underside of the hood.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that once the car is fully up to operating temperature, it tends to shift hard when coming to a stop. Driving and shifting otherwise seem normal, but it’s something I can feel consistently once everything is warm.
The car does not overheat, but when I’m stopped after driving it smells hot, almost like burning oil or something cooking off. The smell seems strongest when idling after a drive.
I plan to pull the turbo heat shield this weekend to get a better look, but before I tear into it I wanted to see if anyone has ideas or common failure points I should be checking in that area.
I’ll attach some pictures of what I’m seeing underneath as well.

I had the same issue and symptoms as you. Drips on the ground, burning oil smell, and a bit near the cap, although I believe that was just the cap’s seal going bad. It was the turbo drain line. Easy to work on most LPT’s, but my AWD was a pain.

A common leak is the little doughnut oring on the turbo oil return line. That will cost the oil on the back , or right side technically, of the engine , hit the spinning driveshaft and get shot up to the hood liner.
It’s a cheap oring but 2 hours to get off. You need a long m5 hex head for the OE bolts on the bottom of the turbo as well as a fight on the rusty clamp that locks the oil pipe and water pipes together that you will enjoy.

Buy two new oil drain line hex bolts , too. Those heads often are ready to round off and it’s hard working up there

The flange bolts to the turbo with two small hex bolts that take a key head, I think are 5mm.
The drain line is clamped to the water pipe with a spring steel clamp with an m6 bolt that rusts in the heat.

Couple of diagrams. Volvo splits the part numbers between the turbo and lubrication system panels.
Note there is no listing fir part 34 , the gasket between the drain tube amd the turbo. You may have to buy the gasket kit to get that one, or make it up ftom thin cardboard like a cereal box. There is no pressure there so a homemade gasket with some permatex would be fine.
I had a Corteco kit with that gasket where the holes were slightly offset, I had to enlarge them a bit to make it fit
Get two new bolts for the turbo flange, those love to round off. A long m5? Hex driver with a ball head is excellent here.

Skandix shows the flange bolt ism6, but I seem to recall it takes a 5mm hex bit , proceed with caution
