Tomorrow I'm checking out a 2004 V70. Only has 127k miles and they're asking $2800. Timing belt and PCV cleanup hasn't been done yet. I can do that for ~$500 in parts. They're stating it's had no damage and everything is functioning fine. If it rides nice with no codes I'll probably grab it. Won't get me up icy hills but the NA 2.4L will last longer than the 2.5T in my XC70 that is approaching 200k miles.

A set of studded snows and that car will take you any where in winter you care to go. A lot cheaper than maintains a p80 awd, but a p2 awd is much better. In TN a FWD with snows will be great !

It ran nice and smooth so I drove her home. I just ordered a timing belt kit and PCV kit from FCPEURO. I will not risk driving it again until I do the timing belt. Luckily the tensioner has held up for 126,366 miles.

Congratulations XC70Rider!
Did you get two key fobs? 😊

It came with both key fobs along with the owners manual and some service reports. I've done mechanical work on a few 2.4L engines but first time I've owned one. No big darn intercooler tube in the way on this engine!

22 years othe timing belt, well done.

My thesis is that they fail on miles, not on time. Given that Volvo warranty on the same identical parts on a PZEV vin car is 150k miles 15 years, 150k miles is probably well south of the MTBF on miles

You wrote exactly what I thought. I had 98v70xc that was converted to FWD due to propshaft failure and that car was climbing icy hills effortlessly shaming subies and trucks that were not able to make even to half the hill. Offcourse, all things equal, subie has a better awd system.
