Mileage is 255,800
Is there anyway someone could solder the crack? From the overflow is a short rubber hose that connects to a metal line that goes back and down to the manifold. If I hold that up, tight, the crqck is at the final bend before going into the manifold. So I'm presuming the worst - that whole piece would have to be replaced since the connection is permanent.
Read one forum mesage that also had asked about gs smell inside car - and the response mentioned an exhaust leak -- I can see how this has happened as where the water was leaking, slowing, before I identified this crack, it was probably somehow mixing with an area where gas also flows.

I don't think solder is an option on a part like this. However, it may be possible to have it welded.
Another option would be to find a replacement part at a breaker's yard.
Bill.

I would be very careful if gas is nearby...maybe empty the or at least let off pressure at the engine, wait awhile and try a good weld? Is the pipe aluminum? If so, you could get it arc welded...if not, then mig welding, I suppose.

Just to let you know, a friend mentioned a product called JB Weld - found at Kragen's auto zone. It comes with two tubes that you mix and I applied it to the crack. Except for a tiny drip, it worked. I plan to do the appliction again, thicker and think that will totally take care of it! Probably Wednesday, I'll let you know for sure as it takes 5 hrs. to try and then 15 hours before you use it. (The product can be used on a cracked pipe under your sink or other similar cracks.)
Since this has happened, I'm thinking of getting a good service done, detail the inside of the car and see what kind of trade in I can get on a newer model -- I'm pleased to have gotten this many miles on it as that's why I originally purchased a Volvo. I would like a wagon again - but realize mine was the last year they were made entirely in Sweden. Also, I know I wouldn't be able to get a new one - just don't have that many $$$. Do you have any recommendations?
As always, thanks for your replies. Ruth
