1998 V70XC "Saskia" - Introduction, Story, and Repairs

With warmer weather having moved in and the driveway in the shade, I went to do the first full wash and wax, then realized that I hadn’t installed the driver’s side door marker light and it was still a hole only partially covered by electrical tape (previously the live exposed ends of the wore had been jostling around in the door… )

After: (may be hard to tell in the lighting, but the wax and chrome wheel polish made a huge difference)

Several posts have been made in the troubleshooting of my fuel/evap system, doing which I’ll be dropping the viscous coupler and driveshaft to get access to the pump. If anyone has any info for TLC for the VC while it’s out (especially the freewheel) it would be much appreciated.

I think LPT850 and scot850 are the only guys who have commented on VC service and fluid. I think that is a rabbit hole best avoided. You are supposed to store them on end, so all the viscous pieces dont settle or something like that.

Fuel pump replaced (VAST Tuning unit, DW200)
DeatschWerks fuel pump wiring upgrade

Read codes, current trouble codes are:
From ECU
EFI-611 Fuel tank system large leak

From Transmission ECU
AT-143 Kickdown switch, signal too low

From combined instrument readout
CI-221 Vehicle speed signal missing
CI-113 Fuel Level Sensor Signal too high
CI-131 12 pulse vehicle speed signal too high
CI-222 Vehicle speed signal faulty
CI-211 D+ signal to low


ECU code is the infamous P0455 when read by other, more general scanners, been working on that system, but it’s been on the back burner for a bit in light of fuel and oil/PCV things (see here: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/foru ... p?t=108130)

Transmission code from some past reading is something to do with the throttle cable(?)

The codes from the instrument cluster are interesting… any DCT wizard(s) have ideas on those?

Replace that ugly egg crate with a waterfall and she is code to go. It clears codes , too.

There are no 'fluids' to change on the VC unit. It is sealed and uses a silicon fluid as I understand to make the clutch work. The only thin to watch for is the 'nose' bearing and mounting bush for the unit. Bush rubber fails and causes a clunk and the bearing gives a weird rubbing noise, particularly when turning.

Store the VC front end down if it is going to be off fora while. This keeps the fluid around the clutch plates.

The diff and the angle gear are the parts that you can do oil changes on. Volvo used to have different oils for these, but the last time I asked they have now consolidated to using just one for both.

You’re welcome. I came across it and found it handy to be able to look at things in detail when I’m away from my diagnostic laptop, and with it having info for other makes it helps me when fixing other’s vehicles that may not be a Swedish steed

I have arrived at the decision that I’ll be tackling the issues currently being experienced after this crazy busy week has passed, as so far Saskia is safely functional, but needs some finesse and having an eye kept on things (i.e. topping up the oil periodically and having to make more frequent stops at the gas station to add fuel 4 gallons at a time based on a fuel consumption assumption made by the odometer)

Following such there’ll be quite a lot of updates to various running threads, and also a write-up or two to make things more concise for others that may experience such issues on their own 30-ish year old flying moose
