shudder under load

Post by Evanryan »

Hello all: Recently I have noticed a pronounced body shudder when accelerating in reverse. That same shudder is present in foreward, but way less severe. I have recently had the brakes front and back replaced, a new hanger bearing, new sway bushings on the back end. Do I have a tranny problem?

I also have a whine or howl that is audible when driving. Its not engine RPM specific but does alter its tone with changes in speed. The mechanic felt that it was a hanger bearing and replaced it. It's better, but not gone. Could that be related to my shudder? Perhaps a rear end?

The mechanic suggested it might be the reverse bands in the tranny and that in this car they reverse is completely separate from the foreward gears. He said, to ignore it because its likely not going to cause me permanent problems for a long time. He didn't feel the foreward gear shudder, but I do. If the foreward and reverse gears are separate, I feel the odds of both being a problem at the same time remote. That is why I'm starting to wonder about rear end?

Anyone????

Thanks.... 1989 Volvo 240DL with Automatic transmission.

Just a shot- but are your U-joints OK yet. Mine went and it shuddered and howled at certain speeds.

Ok, my lack of mechanical expertise might be exposed here, but......When they replaced my hanger bearing they told me they had the drive shaft off completely and all my u joints were fine. Make sense?

That should have been a good enough check.
