  • Operating Income (EBIT): $83 million (significantly improved from a loss of $1.035 billion in Q2 2025).

Electrified cars (BEV + PHEV) reached 52% of sales (up from 44%).

Business Context

The results reflect Volvo’s strength in electric vehicles, robust performance in Europe, and effective cost control. However, they were impacted by a tough competitive environment, unfavorable sales mix and pricing, and a significant slowdown in the China market.

Ongoing global uncertainty from the Middle East conflict also weighed on the quarter.Despite these challenges, the return to profitability and strong underlying progress on electrification and cost savings give the company confidence for the quarters ahead.

Thank you for data.
I think volvo went to too upmarket and if initially they were able to get audi and mb buyers attracted with lower price and better quality(probably 2016-2020 years IMHO), now they are priced almost the same and quality is down. Product is missing a nice reliable v6(if you have money for new volvo, you can afford some extra gas, lets be honest here). Style of the product is the same as everyone else(put cx90 and xc90 close and one can think they are made by the same company). Driving experience is still very good, but nothing to rave about(MB-comfort, BMW-driver experience). Still lack of entry level car..
So i think they will decline further in 3rd quarter

Audi aren't a quality product. A prestige product in terms of price and image, but its been 40 years since they were a quality vehicle and various owners surveys around the world reflect that reality.

At that level and sector of the market image trumps substance - look what a huge seller the woefully unreliable Range Rover/LR product has become. Improving finish and reliability never hurts, but fundamentally its thats not why someone spends 100 or more large on one brand over another.

They're in a spot because they put all their eggs in the 4-cyl basket, then a few years later put all their eggs in the EV basket. The EV jam wasn't too hard to get out of because they caught it early*, but yes as you mentioned Vova, they're still left trying to appeal to well-off buyers with 4-cylinders. That's a jam. They're giving up the buyer who won't even visit a Volvo dealer because of this.

* this might bite in a few years when the SPA gasoline cars are very long in the tooth. Already they're 11 years old with no gasoline platform to replace them. For now, not a problem, but this might hurt in the future. Will they stretch the SPA or build a new one?

Thats true in the states, but in the rest of the world, Europe in particular, few care about the number of holes in the block. The sort of drivers that do tend not to go the Volvo way anyway. The US is only a little over c.1/6th of Volvo's world market so theyre not going to engineer their relatively limited product range to prioritise them.

One should perhaps compare Volvo's financial results to other western manufacturers. Compared to the size of the comlany theyre doing far better than, say, Ford or even some of the large groups such as Stellantis. Pro-rata theyre dojng rather better than BMW across the world, and BMW have engines with many cylinders. They're very healthy indeed compared to VW, who are in such dire straits theyre planning to bin a fifth of the workforce and rationalise the model range to about half the current number of models.

When placed in the context of the performance of their peers theyre actually doing quite nicely.

Interesting perspectives here.

If you sit in your yard and listen to people go by, it feels like 90% of the products out there are 2-liter turbo fours.

Matt, is Volvo Trucks a completely different company? No connection to Geely?

Correct. Different companies, Volvo Trucks never got bought. I just looked it up and Geely does own around 8.2% of it however.

For VW there is always way to go back to the "roots" and start producing Type 82 again. Given increased military spending everywhere...
In regards to the comparison between rest of the world and USA, we have different needs based on our realities(noone is judging toyota for producing LC70 for Australia market..ok, minis the fact that new ones only comes in automatic recently).
I would also add that volvo hybrid power train is total joke. You are buying Aisin transmission from toyota, so buy a hybrid unit as well(Mazda and subaru are doing it and selling them good).
I have 6 Volvos in my family, but I honestly cant imagine myself buying a new one any time soon. For me it will likely me Toyota/Lexus producs.
In terms of stelantis/ford...well both went up market and abandoned its baseline buyer and now are paying the price. Fords quality is so great that recall chart has to be "expanded" for them every week. Stelantis is another story of "great success" and prior CEO is a good representation of that.
I never was a big fan of Mazda due to rust issues(either in Europe or in NYS), maybe in California and Arizona they are great. But 3.3, 3.3T, 2.5 hybrid engines are providing a great variety for every preference/taste/need. (Can put a rant about ford again for removing 5.0 v8 from platinum line).

Could you explain this further please?

Honda just killed off their only US EV, the Prologue. News broke yesterday. I couldn't help but draw the parallel to Volvo killing the EX30 in the US in March... similar cars, same 2-year run.

While we're on the subject, I mentioned the SPA platform and its age a few posts above. Given that the US is not as EV friendly as Europe, what do you think they'll do with it? The first SPA was XC90 in 2014 for 2015 model year. Stretch it to perhaps 17(+) years, or develop a new gasoline platform?

I first wrote about this in the June 2026 MVS newsletter.
Volvo got caught at a bad time with the SPA platform vehicles turning 11 years old this year. SPA cars are the XC90, V90, V90XC, XC60, V60 etc. made after 2015 model year. Volvo’s plan to switch to an all-EV lineup by 2030 was cancelled 20 months ago because Americans stopped buying EVs in droves after the significant post-Covid auto sales bump. The SPA line will need to be extended to perhaps 17 years or more to bridge the gap. What if that doesn’t do it?

Will Volvo develop another gasoline platform or keep the SPA soldiering along? They can’t use the EV platforms (SPA2 and SPA3) because those would have to be reworked extensively to accommodate the very different internal combustion architecture.

For reference, Volvo’s P2 platform served for 15 years, P3 for 12, and P80 was used for 14 years.
Three more years of SPA would match Volvo's recent high of 15.
