A while back I built a simple web-based Volvo 850 OBD1 decoder and wanted to share it with everyone maintaining these cars.

The early 850 models use the manual flash-code system, and most of the code tables online are incomplete, scattered, or inconsistent. I got tired of searching through long lists every time I pulled a code, so I made a lightweight tool that instantly shows the meaning of any three-digit OBD1 code.

No backend, no installs, just a clean interface and a consolidated code list. If you’re working with the diagnostic ports or doing any OBD1 troubleshooting, this should save time (I know it has saved me a lot of time).

If you want to try it out or contribute code definitions, the Git repository is the following: https://gitlab.com/XavierEduardo99/volvo-obd1-decoder.
And the web application can be accessed via this link: https://xaviereduardo99.gitlab.io/volvo-obd1-decoder/

I'd love to get some feedback, and will try to implement, improve and fix as much as possible. Hope the application is useful for all of you.

A hardware interface that would count the blinks and perhaps switch between controllers should not take much. A 99¢ Raspberry Pi Zero might do the job.

The moment I checked it out, I thought exactly the same thing. Pushing and holding the button, 3 seconds, 5 pushes in so much time, whatever, it’s a PITA sometimes. But I love the fact that you get an instantaneous answer. It would take a ton more time to also have, for each code, the most common repair or similar but would be nice for the layman.

1995 850, The midyear change was OBD 1 to OBDII.
850s can be retrofitted to OBDII.
