Just spent a really frustrating 2 weeks trying to get the 2nd front axle for the 05 V70 FWD base fitted with new boots. I posted in the daily section how I had an issue with the retaining c-clip not sliding in the recess for retaining the outer CV joint. I bent 3/4 I had getting one axle back together.
I then went out to try to find a replacement for the the other axle as I had bent the new one for it.
Volvo said they could get it but when they arrived they were not for the outer joint, but the the retaining c-clip for the inner end of the LH front axle. Turns out you cannot buy it separately. You have to buy a whole new kit!! What a load of nonsense.
Does anyone know where one can try to purchase these separately possibly? I will approach GKN Lobro, but already know what their likely response is. There are no part numbers that either I or the parts guys at the dealer or Volvo can find.
Any thoughts?
I think I have figured out the reason this was happening so should be able to prevent this happening again but it is no guarantee.
Needless to say, when I just did the 2nd one when the kit arrived today, it went together with no real issues. Always learning!
Neil.

There is no fixing the damaged clips. The clips all have a gouge in them which has compromised their strength.
I did not know McMaster Carr carried these type of clips. When I'm next in the area of their store I will drop in and see what they have.
The video is somewhat helpful, but not for P2 axles. When I get more time I will post pictures of the differences. I have repaired many axles over the years, but these have a challenge which I had not foreseen. The old story of, now I know, I know. 2nd axle was a relative breeze.
Appreciate the input!

Also, the key thing with Outer c-clip during reinstallation...
- Tap the CV joint stud with rubber hammer until it touches the c-clip.
- Then gently "tuck" the c-clip underneath while hammering a bit more. If you have 2nd person, it is better but I have done this by myself for years.
- Then try to "tuck" the middle part of the c-clip in a bit. No need for hard hammering.
- So, just tuck the c-clip a bit, tap a bit.
No sure how you damaged the c-clip (not easy to damage it).

It's easy when you don't know how!
I was doing by myself. I eventually managed to figure out the tucking in. I was using a brass hammer. The secret was that I did not have any lube on the clip which I guess was causing it to latch hard in place and not collapse as it should.
Anyway, I did it basically the same way you did it, but 2nd axle took only about 10 mins total to get the outer cv joint in place.
Once you know, it is not too bad. I still don't like it compared to the P80 as you still can't tell if the clip has latched in place.
I will do a write up based on my 'process' to do it correctly from my learnings!
Appreciate the input.
