My '09 XC70 starts easily but only runs for about 3-4 seconds before stalling out (the manner in which it quits seems more like fuel than electrical to me) It will then immediately restart and run another 3-4 seconds. It will do this for as long as I care to sit there pressing the start button.
Before I start even minor disassembly for testing can anyone suggests a likely culprit. Perhaps the fuel pressure sensor.

The PUmp Electronic module has a 100k-150k life or so on these cars. Check fuel pressure -sorry, I don’t know the 3.2 check point and can’t access my files over seas

As Abscate mentions, have the fuel pressure checked for running pressure and if it holds pressure. Like Abscate I am not familiar with the 3.2 engine and it's diagnostics.
I did take a quick look to see if the fuel rail hade a Shraeder valve on it to test the fuel pressure at the rail but I can't see one that is obvious on parts diagrams.
If it is fuel related, there is not really much in the system to fail.
1) Blocked fuel filter 0 when was it last changed?
2) Failing fuel pump. If I understand what I have read, like the P2 cars, the fuel pressure valve is in the fuel pump. If you test the fuel pressure and it bleeds off quickly when the key is turned off, it has gone bad. Fuel pump might also be cooked.
3) PEM (fuel pump relay) may have failed - notes as per Abscate on life span.
4) Fuel pressure sensor - This is on the end of the fuel rail. These can fail, but from my limited P2 fails, it has so far not been the issue.
The other things that can cause this failure would be:
1) Immobiliser issue - On earlier cars this cuts the fuel pump. The fact you get 3-4 secs run time, it may be residual pressure is running it.
2) MAF - If this fails, you get this type of error
3) Throttle body failure.
I am only sing my experience of the older models with 5 cylinder engines and generic causes for this type of failure.

Did you do any service on it lately? I had this issue after doing my PCV system, I ended up flooding the engine from doing it so much. Had to let it sit overnight before trying again.
