By that description your head gasket was gone.

If there are no holes that type of puller is no good. Have you tried using a long screwdriver or a pry bar and gently trying to ease the pulley off? They usually come off fairly easily but you may need a two or three legged puller:

You should be able to hire one.

I thought the pry bar and the three legged puller were big no no's.

I guess I could gently try to pry it off.

No you won't. I am heading for the Northumbrian hills on Sunday untill Friday. No phone, definitely no computer just total peace and quiet.

So I got back to working on the head yesterday and hit a snag.

It looks like a few of the coolant passages are blocked. Someone told me sometimes they are closed from the factory. But there are matching passages on the block.
I tried to drill them out but I stopped when I saw it was filled with aluminum.
I'm going to take it to a machine shop and see what they say.

It's weird, there was never any indication that it overheated and the head is definitely not warped.

I'll try to post some pictures later.

Drilling out the holes is not advisable.

Have a look at the head gasket. It may blank off the matching passages in the block.

If you are going to a machine shop have them check the head to make sure it is not warped. They have better equipment for this than a steel straight edge.

I posted pics in my last post.

That's why I stopped. I thought it was just clogged. I was surprised to see there was aluminum in there!

I couldn't tell if they were blocked off with the old gasket. I'll look and match it up with the new gasket.

So I put it all back together, just a couple of small things left to do.

I have a question on the timing belt. The cam sprocket was at the correct mark and the crank pulley was at zero degrees, straight up, the Distributor sprocket lined up with it's timing mark. I put the belt on the camshaft at the mark on the belt, The next mark lined up with the camshaft sprocket, the crank looked good, everything looked right except one thing.
The Distributor rotor was not pointing right on the number one spark. It looks like to rotor blade was just hitting #1 with the belt on. I'm guessing this is correct. The spark should start before TDC right?

I guess the best way to tell will be when I try to start it tonight.

What is the double white line on the belt for? It didn't seem to line up with anything.

Thanks

Danny

The ignition timing is 12 degrees (+ or - 2) at 750 rpm so the rotor will not be pointing directly at #1 when the timing marks are aligned. Nothing to worry about there.

I have not seen a double white line on any of the belts I have used.

Bill, I hope you enjoyed your vacation!

I got it all back together & running. Sounds great! No more smoke out of the tailpipe either :)

Thanks for all your help.

I need to rest because tomorrow I help my son with the head gaskets on his Taurus.

Danny,

Thank you for the update. It is good to know everything went as planned.

Is this a family thing about head gaskets?
