General Advice

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

General Advice

Post by AndyCYXU »

Hello, in a way i wish i found this site earlier but hey..!

I will highly likely be a new owner of an older 2001 s80 2.9L volvo... "non-Turbo" (not T6)..

well i kind bought the car after reading many reviews and customer complain sites etc.. and found out that all in all this is a very reliable vehicle.. not i found this site and many people say stay away from 2001 WOW!

I test drove it and all car has 151000km it is very clean overall really has no rust like to a 7 year old car in Canada it's in great shape... well since i do not think i be able to cancel the deal.. although i am not sure i want to.. I had a question for some of you to suggest what i could look for to make sure car is generally OK.. would there be anything you recommend to do after i buy it.. I do consider going to VOLVO dealer and make sure all the recalls have been addressed on it and if not will get this done..
other then that I be open to any suggestions from anyone and is it really true that 2001 was a bad year.. hmmm.. or is it just a matter of luck... maintnance... what not...

Thanks
Andy

Your in Canada? 150K kilometers is still under 100K miles so the first thing I would do is flush the transmission with good clean Mobil #3309 or Volvo (more expensive- but the same thing) transmission fluid. If it has not transmission issues now, best to do preventative maintenance- the transmission is the weak point for your car. Anyway, that's where I would start. If it had over 100K miles, I wouldn't flush but a drain and fill. Both instructions w/ pictures are in the repair database section.

I'm not sure, but I believe his transmission uses Dexron III fluid. I know mine does. If you can't find that, Dexron VI is the replacement for it.

Thank You

I will get the transmition fluid job done... not sure if it has or has not been done.. i looked and the fluid looks nice and clean.. but if i end up buing it i get under and seeif it appears like the cover to drain fluid was removed recently or not.. if not i get it done whatever best fluid and filter costs can't be more then a new transmition :) , I refused to buy an ACORD 32TL for that very reason that transmition was bad on those.. now i found out that the 01 volvo has a problem with it too.. GRRRR

Oh well i hope for the best...

Thanks
Andy

Ah, I forgot it is an S80....yes, I think you're right.
But...best thing to do is check the owner's manual to be sure.
