wheel rubbing

Post by johnp1va »

I have a 2001 Volvo v70 t5 with 109000 miles on it and when I turn really sharp either left or right, the wheels rub on the inside of the wheel well. I took it to tires plus and they said that new struts would fix the problem but the car does not bounce up and down when I push down on the front end. Is this common with a volvo v70 or are the truely struts shot?

It could be anything but lube the steering stops first.
Easy to do and may solve your issue

Although slightly different on your car, the location and the how-to is the same: http://volvospeed.com/steerstops.php
If you turn your wheels all the way you don't even have to take the wheels off...just slide under that section and you'll see them. Oh, by the way, I try to use a heavy duty grease...nothing light weight that will wash off quickly.

Also what size tires are you running and what brand,
and did you install new tires recently?

Hello... and warning on the rubbing!!! I have a 2002 v70 and we had the same problem when we put on our second set of tires (Kuhmo). The sidewalls were too "straight" and "tall" which caused the rubbing when the wheel was turned all the way, one way or the other. Luckily, I was checking our brakes one day and I noticed that due to the rubbing over time, the inside corner of the sidewall had been worn down on both tires to the radial and could have popped at any time. We had immediately gone out and put on the tire brand that the dealer was selling, Pirelli, and now we don't have the rubbing anymore. Make sure that the sidewalls are not too straight and have a rounded edge where the tread hits the road.

You don't have to go with Pirelli...actually a lot of people have very negative things to say about them. There are other tires what will work fine with your car- check out www.tirerack.com for more information. For our V70 we recently bought Bridgestone Turanza Serenity tires and for my S70, the General Altimax HP's.

I have some pictures of my problem showing the wheel stop and front and back of the vehicle. Just by looking at the pictures and comparing the front and back wheels, I think it is the front struts are worn out. What do you guys think?
