reading engine serial numbers

Does anyone know how to read the serial numbers on a B5234T?

the article number is 1289853

the serial number is 265288

I don't understand article number or serial number...more explanation please.
The engine number is on a white sticker on the side of your timing belt cover. If that piece is missing it's also stamped on your engine, also timing belt side, but on the rear of your engine opposite the firewall, but that's very difficult to see, even with a periscoping mirror.

It's important to know that number...write it down.
For instance, up to a certain engine number takes a different timing belt, etc. You'll see if you decide to change the belt yourself.

But do you know how to interpret the serial number? That is, how do you know if this serial number is right for a 1994 engine? Does the number tell you where and when the engine was made?

I'm sure there is a list somewhere that correlates the engine serial number to the chassis number but the dealers don't have access to such a list.

I ran into a similar issue with my son's car which apparently had an engine change at some point and I wound up buying the wrong PCV kit for it.
