V70-2004 Battery life

Volvo has a nice battery with a gas drain incorporated in the housing. To do 5 winters with the same battery used to be a lot. Interstate guarantees their copy for 84 months. Do you think OE batteries can do the 84 months as well?

Doubtful....Volvo doesn't make their own batteries...
Buying a known name brand battery is a good idea. Noticed that PepBoys has Bosch batteries on sale right now with $10 rebate on them that will also fit your car.

Four years is about it, FIVE possibly, depending on the weather and your driving habits.
If it sits for days or weeks at a time, probably not

Gas drain? Is that what my traditional brain would call a vent?

It's a vent that looks like a drain because it descends to, and through the floor. Since the battery is in the cabin (!), by calling it a "drain", possibly Volvo implies, that the acidic gas, can, in no way be, vented into the cabin air. Maybe they are being politically correct. Volvo, being one of the few that can sail at least 50 mph around South America, via Cape Horn, have their way. The way of champions.
