timing belt replacement costs for V70
Can anyone tell me what it will cost to replace my timing belt on my '98 V70 from 1) the dealer, 2) a private mechanic?

i paid a volvo dealer $430 labor and $160 parts in feb 03, the belt tensioner just went, now junk, worthless. I recommend replacing the tensioner also when doing the belt.

I can't imagine having >50,000 mile car and paying someone to fix all the things wrong with it....it'd be a $600 repair every couple months - may as well have a new car payment.....

Here in Portland, ME the dealer quoted me $375 for a timing belt and aux. belt change. He said we'd decide what else to do when he got the belt off. I know it would end up being a lot more -- the car has 96K miles.
I ended up going with an indy import shop who estimated $700 for timing belt, hydraulic tensioner, new water pump/thermostat, aux belt/idler pulley/etc. My car is a '99 V70R.
Changing belts on these volvos is not terribly difficult or expensive, but IMHO you'd be crazy not to spend the extra couple hundred bucks for a tensioner and a water pump if your car has high miles.
