Under engine air scoop missing. Volvo Wagon 1997 850 GLT

My Volvo 850 GLT wagon has 125k miles (only 50K are mine).
Last week while backing out of a parking space, I heard what sounded like I ran over a coke can. Upon looking, I found that the lower air scoop had become detached from one side. Since I was short of coat hangers at the time, I removed it and have experienced no performance problems to date.
The question is: How necessary is this curb bumper and can the car live without it??

Same thing happened to me on some ice/snow. I did replace it. It's a $100 piece of plastic which is designed to do two things.
1) It is meant to channel cooling air to the underside of the engine block.
2) It protects the radiator, among other things, from debris kicked up on the road.
Then again, I'm anal retentive about my car.

It's called the "AIRGUIDE" and yes, it's necessary

If you don't want to buy a new airguide and yours isn't damaged too badly, you can just drill two holes on each side, mount it back up and secure it with zip ties.
