Bristol Hercules and Roll Royce Merlin engines

Post by tailor »

This weekend we happened to be in the area of the Canadian Air Force Museum in Quinte, about 2 hours East of Toronto.

and I thought a few pictures of history, may be of interest to the budding mechanics and followers of MVS.

Clearly timing on these engines would have had to be perfect, makes you wonder at just how smart these engineers and mechanics were, and they did not have the assistance of computers.

The Rolls Royce Merlin engine, 12 cylinders, fitted to the Spitfire and the Hurricane.

Thank you for posting these photos. The RR Merlin had the most distinctive sound of any engine. When I hear it it still sends shivers down my spine.

They were engineers/mechanics. They were trained to repair engines, not just fit new parts because a computer says that is what is needed. In the late 1960s I used a garage which was run and staffed by ex RAF and army mechanics. All diagnoses were done by listening to the engine and, if necessary, a test drive. The owner had worked on Spitfires and did cheat occasionally by putting the tip of a screwdriver on the engine and his ear to the handle so he "could hear her talk to him".
Happy days.
