Tried to sign up (RonJeffries) with odd results. Wouldn't let me log in, wouldn't send me my password. Anyway, maybe this will take. I hope so.

I have a 1998 V70R AWD. The fuel sensor failed, I ran out of gas, and a $500 part (combined pump/sensor) later, I'm back on the road. Now I'm rightfully a bit wary about the gauge.

Yesterday, showing a little over two gallons left, I filled up. It took 18 gallons! If the tank is 18.5, as the manual says, the gauge is, um, optimistic. Or is the tank more like 20 gallons, with a 1.8 gallon reserve where the light goes on?

If the gauge is off, is there any way to adjust it besides dropping the tank? That's almost impossible on the AWD version.

Relatedly, the computer seems to think I have 20 gallons. I average right about 20 MPG and the car always shows trip miles plus miles to go approximately equal to 400. Very odd.

Volvo customer support tells me the tank is 18.5 capacity. That makes me feel retroactively nervous about putting 18 in it the other day.

I have the same issue with my 1998 V70R with the amount of fuel I put it and the onboard computer, though when I first fill up, it shows 365 miles, but then after I've gone about 60 miles, it recalculates to about 340 miles to empty. I haven't run my car to the low fuel yet so I'm not sure how much fuel would be left there.

Very interesting that the manual states 18.4 gallons as the capacity for my 1998 R, but my friend's 1999 V70R shows 17.4 gallons for AWD models.

I had the tank drained to get the gauge calibrated. We put 1 gallon in. I then drove six blocks to a gas station and filled the tank. It took 19 gallons.

This is an 1998 V70R.
