1993 240GL, manual gear, non-ac heater fan disassembly...

Post by kaerlighedsbamsen »

My fan motor is making those squeking sounds that suggest it is soon to be replaced / fixed. The sound is only audible when the car is moving and especially when breaking. I interpret this as loose bearings or loose motor so that the fan touches the sides of the housing. Any other possible causes..?

The heater allso smells a litte like 14 years of (the former owners) dust have assembled inside so thought about giving the whole thing a thorough wash. Is that a bad idear?

First thing is to get the heater disassembled and the motor out- and here the trouble start: Tried dismantling the front w the radio and controls, the sides and framing but can not make out how to get that thing out without taking the whole car apart. Are there a smart way to go about this? (My Haynes manual just displays a exploded view of about 85 different parts and no help).

Will the whole thing come out in one piece or is it better to take it apart on place?

It is not possible to see how it is connected with the air intake- do i need to access it from above?

All hints, pictures and help will be greatly appreciated!

There is a well known phrase or saying when the 240 fan motor needs to be replaced -

"How do they build a 240?" Answer, "They hang a fan motor on a hook and send it down the production line and build everything else around it."

Not much consolation but that seems to be how it is done.

Have a look at this link. This is for the 1984 model but, as far as I know, it hasn't changed.

Also have a look at the 'chainsaw' link in that post. It may save some work.
