740 GLE Wagon 1989 Master Brake Cylinder

Post by lkalloch »

Hey all,

Does anyone know if the '89 740 GLE wagons have ABS? Or a good way to find out if it does? I'm looking to get a new brake master cylinder and install it... which leads me to my next point: Any tips or instructions on how to do this? Thanks for the help!

Cheers,
Luke

ABS was an option on that particular car so it may or may not have it.

If it is fitted you will see an ABS warning light under the 6 position on the clock whenever you start up and your lights do a self test.

Why do you need to replace the master cylinder? In your previous post it looked as though you needed to change the fluid. Have you done this?

Upon further inspection the master cylinder was melted and was allowing a lot of moisture and other contaminants to get into the brake fluid... so I decided to do that before I would flush the brake lines. I guess that makes sense if I have the ABS light that I would have ABS. haha. Thanks!

How did you melt the master cylinder?

Replacing it is easy. Disconnect all of the hydraulic lines at the master cylinder. Plug or cover the ends of the lines to stop foreign bodies entering them. Remove the cylinder attaching nuts and remove the cylinder from the vehicle.

Do not spill the brake fluid on the paintwork.

To install the new cylinder is the reverse of removal.

Bleeding the system differs for ABS and non-ABS cars. Post which you have for the method.

I bought the car with the melted master cylinder, apparently.

I'm still not sure about the ABS. There isn't a light that says ABS but there is on that says ANTI- that comes on, would that be it?

Yes. The 740 warning light says "Anti Lock".

Working from the left side of the panel the first two warning lights are not used. The next one is Anti Lock. If that lights up you should have ABS.
