Climate Control
Climate Control
I have a 01 S60 T5 with the dual zone climate control. The problem I am having is as follows. When I am using the heat, I usually just put it in auto mode and set the temperature at 70 deg, it works fine. If I shut off the car and get back in it, with out changing any of the settings the climate control, it decides to blow out cold air and puts the blower on high. I can only get the heat to come back on if I set the temp on 80 deg. This only happens if I get back in the car within a hour of driving it. It sounds to me that it's the temperature sensor going bad. If this is the case can the sensor be replaced on it's own or do I have to replace the whole unit?. Any suggestions, thanks Mike.
I just fixed mine yesterday. It was dirt in the little temp sensor fan. Clean the dirt out of the fan and the fan will start to work again and your temp auto function will work just fine again. I cannot remember where on this site I found all the details but it is here and worked great.

Mandrake,
I have a 01 V70 T5, and from cruising this and other forums, learned the climate goes through a test series as it is 1st turned on. Included in this is the A/C test and that the fan will go to high for a little while. I don't know the time periods this test takes, as all I can do is "parrot" back what I've previously read. My experience with the climate control is more the opposite of yours in that when it has been real hot out, the A/C runs full blast at the high fan and I get too cold, so I crank up the temp selection to 78 degrees or so. What I think is really happening is the system is trying to get the cabin to the selected temperature as fast as possible so that means move lots of air with the fan on high. I think both of us don't like it so we select a much different temperature to get the fan to slow down (the temperature difference is less so the computer figures you can't be too uncomfortable, so why bother with the fan noise)? Hay, just my guess, but I think there is nothing wrong with your system or mine, just how someone programmed the computer to do things.

Try just using MANUAL, I do (always) and it's MUCH better!
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

My 2001 V70 was doing the same thing as Mandrake. I follow the instructions, which I cannot find and it fixed the problem. It took me about 15mins.
1, pull the pen holder straight out. It pops out towards the gear shiter.
2, use a torx driver to losen and remove two screws behind the pen holder that hold the ECC unit. Do not drop the screws.
3, pull on the bottom of ECC unit and tilt it out. On the back there is a tiny fan that is held in by two philips screws. Remove the screws and carefully pop the fan off its perch.
4, now remove the dirt/lint/hair from the fan. I used long nose pliers and cleaned it up with alcohol and Q-tips.
I put everything back together and the temp has been spot on ever since.
Hope this helps and sorry that I cannot find the article that give the detail scoop on how to do this.

Problem is JRL, that even in manual mode the heat will only come on if I put the temp all the way up to it's highest setting. It will blow cold air on all other settings up to the highest no matter how cold it is in the car or outside.
What I did so far is take a computer duster put it in the slots for the sensor and blew it out. I'll see if this works. If not, I'll take out the board and try cleaning the fan off.
Checksix I also have the same problem as you in the summer. The CC put's the blower on high when I get back in the car. This isn't as much of a problem because all I have to do is turn the fan down, at least it's blowing cold air.
And BTW thanks for the help.
I hope that dust sprayer works for you. I did not even think if this. However, There was so much fuzz and crap around the fan that I am not sure that it would have done the job on mine. Post your results cause if this works it would be a nice fast fix to a very annoying problem. I could not stand that full force cold air blowing when it was -7°C out and having to turn the heat to max just to stop it from blowing cold air. Glück.
