Fan/Blower problem Volvo S60Ts 2001

Post by clewisuk »

I have recently purchased the above model of Volvo and I am very happy all round with it. It is in mint condition and at 80k it drives like new.

One issue I am having is the blower/fan doesn't adjust (have varying levels of intensity according to the rotation of the knob). The AC works fine and my best description would be the fan works on notch 1 of 10(?) or off.

 Any ideas?

Carl

PS. Any other advice for this year of S60 would be much appreciated as this is my first Volvo.

Not sure I understand the issue. Is the system in automatic or are you trying to run manual and make the selections? Overall best results are in automatic. Just adjust the temps. Sometimes too much higher or lower than you would think, but the higher the difference in the actual temp and the temp that is set determines the fan speed.

Hi Checksix - thanks for your reply.

On manual mode when you twist the knob (with LED's around the side) to adjust the fan speed it only operates on off and every other twist is just on low. Also, the front de-mist button works but again only blows slowly.

The auto function does work but only blows air out (at the correct temperature) slowly.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Carl

Older cars had 2 resister packs next to the fan...one to control the slow speed...the other to control the faster speeds. For the faster speeds to not work, the bad resister pack would have to be replaced. In the evolution of these units, the best I could tell, the resister packs became more sophisticated to take on the operation of 2 in one, therefore the resister pack in your car (VADIS refers to yours as a Power Unit) has both parameters in it. Reading from VADIS, #A4 through #A1 has a resistence of 510 ohms while #A3 through #B1 has 4.1 Kohms. I would say the entire Power Unit needs replacing and to get to it in your car, your fan motor will have to come out because the Power unit is located in it's cage, right under it. You could certainly get into the area under your glove box and test the resistence to make sure but what you're going to find is probably what I'm saying. For location and part information, I've included this document (it is #5, right under the highlighted #4 fan motor):
S60 Std Climate Unit.pdf

I may have misunderstood the original poster to say he had a standard unit (non-ecc) and I posted the PDF for that. However, on second look in VADIS, the location of the fan and the Power Unit are the same as well as part numbers, so, good luck with this and let us know what you find/do.

Btw, this is a hard part to find, but if you'll go here: http://www.foreigncarpartsonline.com/searchItem.epc (fcpgroton's other on-line store), and put in part #8693262 you'll find it for a decent savings. Oh, and since you have an '01 Volvo, after it is replaced, you might have to get a software download at the dealer to get your car to recognize this new part. Anyway, I hope everything works out for you and you can get your problem resolved.
