I have a 2000 S40 Turbo. I have recently found that under the car, exhaust is leaking from a crack along the flexpipe in front of the catalytic converter. I called my local Volvo dealer here in MD about fixing/replacing that piece in particular. They told me that for this model, I would have to replace not ONLY the flexpipe but also the catalytic converter and the muffler behind that. They said it is all one piece. And, that would cost 1200 dollars.
Is this common for Volvos?
Am I stuck having to replace more parts that I need or is it possible to get just the flex pipe alone? I feel it would be silly and expensive to replace all parts for one problem. Any suggestions? I normally always go to the dealer for service, but this is annoying....

Below is service material from Volvo themselves for your car:

As you can tell, it's obvious that the CAT comes off of the flex pipe and there are 4 screws holding it on. This shop is trying to rip you off. Find another shop.

Thanks for the confidence that what the Volvo dealer said was wrong. I really appreciate it. I have called some shops which specialize in exhaust and mufflers and they have offered a free look and were confident I could replace only the flexpipe. Thanks again!
This website is wonderful.

I have a 2001 S40 with a similar problem. I actually had the weld just after the flex pipe break and have exhaust leaking from there. I also talked to a Volvo dealership and found out that it was going to cost me over $1000 dollars to fix the problem.
So my question is what did you end up doing for your flex-pipe problem? Is there just a flex-pipe section that I can purchase for cheap? I would like to get this fixed for as little as possible.
