In answer to the last two posts, the problem seemed to be a plastic part within the latch mechnism that moved/broke/got angry and quit working, who knows. By the time they got through destroying the mechnism any hope of a detailed explanation was lost.
The mechanic said in earlier versions it was easy to get at part of the latch to pull on it and open the door, but that part is now contained within the enclosed casing.
Amusingly today the window switch in that door stopped working and now one must replace the entire switch panel of six switches when one of the window switches goes bad. So that door has cost me $600 this week.
Having owned, loved, worked on, and lived with upwards of 10 volvos since 1972 I am very angry at Volvo over this one. It seems to be quite expensive to fix compared to older ones.

Sometimes those switches just get corroded and cleaning them good with contact cleaner takes care of them. These switches are often available on eBay at a huge savings.
