whine from 240 driveshaft(?)

Post by OBrien »

Hi all -

89 240DL wagon, 167k

On cold mornings, I get a weird whining noise from what feels like right under the shift level as I back down the driveway, like with each revolution of the driveshaft. By the time I'm in the street (maybe 90 feet), it stops, sometimes with an abrupt click or snap-like sound, and then drives fine the whole day. Happens also if going forward, although is usually about over by the time you shift into Drive. This is just a winter problem. Is it the center bearing?

(also 97 850GLT wagon, 104k)

Thanks!
