Power steering shaft/rack replacement options????

I'm wondering whether I can swap an older steering shaft ( from 1979 242) that incorporates a rubber ring to a later model (1981 onwards) that has the square collapsable shaft without changing the steering column or the power steering rack. I believe there are different shaft sizes (15mm Vs 19mm) on the rack end, but not sure about the steering column end.

Is the steering setup a complete system for each model or can they be mixed and matched?

I need to get rid of the rubber ring to allow a motor transplant to fit and space is at a premium.

This is not a definitive "yes" but having trawled through many pages of VADIS for 240 part numbers I have found that the steering shaft part number 1229209 is used on all 240 models from 1979 to 1993. The steering column was changed at least twice during that time.

The shaft is shown as fitting to all steering racks both with and without power steering from 1979 to 1993.

I have never tried this type of 'repair', nor have the two Volvo techs I have spoken to today, so will not totally commit myself but hope that it gives you some help.
