"Passenger Airbag Off" lt. coming on when it shouldn't ('06)

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

"Passenger Airbag Off" lt. coming on when it shouldn't ('06)

Post by MHaas »

2006 S80. My wife is average size (125-130 lbs.) but when she rides in the passenger seat, the "passenger airbag off" light comes on. This seems to happen about half the time she is in the car and it doesn't coincide with her shifting around or anything like that. If she unbuckles, raises up out of the seat (dangerous) then sits back down, it will work fine...for a while. I'm imagining a pricey trip to the dealer unless someone here can help. (Maybe I can avoid the trip to the dealer by getting my wife to bulk up to 160 or so....)

Your car is so new that it could just be the sensitivity setting for your car's seat (weight of passenger) that needs tweaking with software...but not sure. I think you're going to have to bite the bullet with the dealer on this one.

I believe what is needed is calibration of the OWS (Occupant Weight Sensor). This is a VIDA repair, unfortunately, though no software download should be necessary...it's purely a calibration routine. If the airbag is being disabled, the system believes your passenger weighs less than 60 lbs. Calibrate the OWS first, if that doesn't fix it, then the sensor pad and pressure transducers will likely need to be replaced.

Thanks for the help. I'll see if I can get this adjusted.
