850SE Estate2.0 Auto 20 valve 1993 ABS Light

Post by tedsy »

Right here goes:
I have just bought my 1993 850 Estate. When I bought it I knew that the ABS light came on randomly. I asked the guy to get a daignostic check done before I bought it and it came back with an intermittent fault on the ABS ECU.
I have bought a second hand one from EBay,changed it and guess what the light still appears randomly. It sometimes stays off for days, then will come on,but if I turn off the ignition it resets the light.
After looking at various forums I am guessing that it might be an ABS wheel sensor?
Any tips on fault finding and fixing will be very much appreciated.

Cheers Mark

Mark,

Read the codes from port A-3 and post them back. The instructions on how to read codes is here:

http://volvospeed.com/CheckEngine.php

They focus on port A-2 which is the engine but it works the same way on port A-3 which is the ABS.

Lee,
I have just read the codes and If I have done it right I have 2 fault codes which are 1,4,1 and 1,4,2.

Both of those codes relate to the brake pedal. 1-4-1 is a faulty brake pedal position sensor and 1-4-2 indicates a faulty brake light switch.

Grab a copy of the manual from here:

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/downlo ... vo_850.zip

It is specific to a 1995 model but it is 95% the same for your 1993. Once you unzip it see the file named anti lock brake system and traction control.pdf. It will walk you through some diagnostic procedures. You need to get a little creative since no one has the breakout box.

Be careful if you decide to remove the pedal position sensor from the brake booster. It has an O ring around it that wants to get sucked into the booster if you don't step on the brake pedal (with the car off) several times to release the vacuum.

Thanks Lee,
Sounds like I will wait for a warmer weekend and get my dad to dust off his voltmeter while I bring some cold beers.
Appreciate all the help.

Mark
