1995 940 - Changing rear door glass / repair wiper Assy

Post by asfd »

Hi all,
this is my first post on this nice website. Last weekend I started to try to fix some things on my mother's 1995 940 turbo Station wagon (with power window) and hit two problems.

First of all, the small fixed right rear door glass has been shattered and I tried to replace it according to these instructions but I couldn't go through. I bought a used glass with its rubber molding. I undid the inside door panel and outside window trim and was able to remove the rubber molding of the broken glass. I then unbolted/unriveted the metal separating track between the fixed and sliding glasss. I was however unable to remove the sliding window from there. From my understanding, I have to remove it in order to be able to put it all back together in the following order:

Once sliding windows is out of its track, push metal separator out of the way (toward the front):
Slide in the new fixed glass/rubber molding.
Push the metal separator over the fixed glass' rubber molding.
Slide the sliding window up its tracks and in its lift mechanism.
Put back outside window trim and inside door panel.
Have a beer.

Is this the way to go? If yes, could you give me some hint as to how to free the window from the lift mechanism because I removed the cotter pins on the rollers but I didn't know how to go from there, I don't even know if it's a needed step. If not, could you please help me with the steps to follow.

I also had a look at the windshield wiper assembly because the one on the passenger side was not working and found out it was because of a broken cable. Do you know if it is possible to get only the cable or do you have any idea as how I could fabricate one myself (dimensions?).

Best regards,

Lova Andriamanjay

If it is anything like the FWD cars, after the pin is released you have to pry the metal ball piece out of the roller piece, then it will be loose from the lifting mechanism to get the glass out. When installing, you have to line everything back up and push the metal ball back into the roller and then reinstall the pin. I use some channel lock pliers to do this (you can hear the ball snap back into the roller). I don't know if yours is the same but maybe so...Volvo didn't deviate from this design much for years and years.

The wiper wire evidently can be replaced...I would look for one off of a junked car. It is in this document, about half way down:

Thanks a lot for this detailed reply. I had a quick look at your documents and the one concerning the rear quarter glass doesn't describe what I want. The glass I have to change is the small fixed glass on the rear door. It is not a "stick-on" glass. I would appreciate if you could find the document describing the replacement of this one.

Thank you,

I would love to post something here to help you but VADIS has absolutely nothing in it about that window (as far as I can tell and I've searched extensively). Hopefully someone else will be able to help you.

I think if you could just post the part about changing the roll-up window I could manage to finish this job.
