Greetings and salutations from sunny FL. I've been lurking / reading the posts in here and I am summarily impressed with the wealth of knowledge and class of the members here!
Anyhow!
I'm embarking on my first Volvo experience. My choice is a 1995 850 T-5R Estate (wagon). Buying the car sight unseen. It's probably a beater - it has 198k miles on the ODO (that's stopped working btw). It's not yellow, but black, and it has an automatic tranny that's (of course) starting to slip.
Questions:
I haven't verified if it truly is a T-5R. Is there a definite way to verify that it is?
I found a 1994 850 Turbo sedan with 77k miles (wrecked).
My grand plan is to swap motor / tranny from the 94 to the T-5R and continue restoring it to it's previous glory.
Any advise? Feel free to email direct too.
I'll post pictures as soon as I have car in my possession.
Greetings from Florida !

Greetings and welcome to MVS villagepc.
I suspect that I am jealous. The best way to authenticate an R is through the VIN. If the VIN itself is authentic it should begin with YV1LW58 on a wagon. The steering wheel and seats are also unique to the R (two tone with suede). The front bumper is also unique.
If the motor itself isn't bad I think I would be inclined to keep the original motor and just swap the transmission. If you do swap the motor just do it as a long block and keep the intake and exhaust manifolds as well as all of the stuff hooked up to them from the R.

Thanks for the reply!
I suspected as much through the VIN verification, I had hoped for a link to a "registry" perhaps... i.e. VIN #'s from XXXXX through XXXXX were T-5R's...etc.
I do believe it to be an R based on the seller's description of the interior - black / suede - but it seems to have the wrong wheels on it based on the side view pic that he's supplied.
He's completed some of the easier repairs (springs / struts / radiator...) and claims that everything else is functioning normal. I hope so!
And Lee - if you had to guess, how much would you think I paid for the car?
This is where you end up jealous...

There have been some attempts at registries for the yellows but never anything complete. The wrong wheels are common and, if the VIN is right, then chances are it is an authentic R.
In many cases the Volan wheels are worth more than the car so they get sold off on their own. Sadly the R spoiler and front air dam get sold off in a similar manner, hopefully you still have those. Frankly, I like the look of the Pegasus wheels better than the Volans anyway. IPD has some Pegasus knockoffs that are likely better than OEM and they have a cool R insignia on them.

Volvo tends to make their premium wheels out of some sort of butter alloy that bends at the first pothole, particularly with low profile tires like the tires on the 17" rims.
From the sound of your post I'm going to guess that you bought it right.
Take lots of pictures and post your progress as you get it back in shape. If you run into vexing issues along the way feel free to post to the 850 forum - chances are one of us has run into a similar problem.

WooHoo ~~!
I haven't taken pictures yet, I will get 'round to-it this weekend. I picked up the 850 yesterday and I haven't had much time w/her to feel things out completely. I drove a total of 200 miles picking her up (with a dolly!) and it was worth every minute!
She is a true 850 T-5R !! Has the two tone interior, aluminum door sills, badging and the proper front fascia / bumper mask.
I am elated! Beyond elated !
She starts and runs. Drove it up the block and back and the tranny slips under heavy boost - a little shudder after the tranny kicks down and RPM's / boost kick in. Normal driving - tranny works fine. AC compressor kicks on and off every few seconds. Glove box has been.... violated? It's hanging there by a few threads and incorrect screws...
Over the weekend, I'll sort things out and post pics / etc...
Interior dash lights don't illuminate. Checked fuses, all OK. There's an interior light that stays on (down by the driver's footwell / hood latch release).
So, there we have it. Working on picking up the donor next.
Just thought I'd share...
