2002 S80 Key will not turn past position 1?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2002 S80 Key will not turn past position 1?

Post by nicdanh »

Hello, I have been having trouble with the key turning lately and finally yesterday it will not go past position 1. I have tried giggleing everything and anything. I have press the brake. Radio lights ect.. work. I am parked nose in and I wa told by the tow truck if they have to put it on a flat bed than they have to drag it out and it could cause damage. They told me to call a lock smith. I am not sure what my best bet is??? If I call a locksmith what happens after that? It's Christmas time and I am trying to do this the cheapest way possible. My car is stuck in a parking lot and I need to do something ASAP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
Michelle

I suspect the lock cylinder has broken, and unless the locksmith specializes in this kind of vehicle (i.e. they know Volvos very well and have VIDA or an Autologic), they probably can't help you too much. A Volvo technician should be able to release the "cable key interlock" while it's in the parking lot so it can be rolled onto the tow truck, thus removing the risk to your vehicle. Since the key will turn to I, there is a shot they can use that to their advantage in removing the shiftlock cable without disassembling the center console. Some Volvo dealers will dispatch a tech onsite for problems like this (mine will)--call them and ask.

Have you tried moving the steering wheel as you turn the key...if the steering wheel is jammed this can happen...forcing it one way or another can relieve the stress against the key too.

Thanks for your reply's. We called around and found out it had to go to the dealership, which I did not want to happen, because they charge WAY to much. If its the part they think it is, it needs to be ordered from germany and it takes 3-5 days to get it. It also cost's 300.00 just for the part. UGH!

So, what part is it that needs replacing?
I'm thinking it can be obtained from an online parts place for a fraction of that price and you will get it much faster to boot.

The Ignition lock needs to be replaced. We were told only the dealership could so this for us. Something about keys being matched up with the part??

Yeah :? that's one of those pesky special order items. Took my dealer 10 business days to get a trunk lock cylinder...they have to be coded to the car. Either that, or change all the locks and delete/authorize brand new keys (only if you're in a hurry to get the car back, as that's horrendously expensive)

Well, maybe so, but maybe not...on my car the key only fits the driver's side door, trunk, ignition chamber and glove box (oh well, that's 4).

Well, that's why it's a value proposition. A "lock kit" for a 2002 S80 (there are 3 depending on chassis code) costs around $375. Labor shows 4 hours (so $380 at my dealer's reasonable $95/hour), 'ignition key application' [software] ($39), and programming 'labor' ($95). $889 plus tax on the low end. If it's worth having the car back tomorrow (say you're going on a long trip), then it's worth it...otherwise it's not.

i recall not needing to program the new cylinder or anything the antennae ring swaps over form the old one. still a very expensive job, you could order the part and do it yourself, not terribly difficult
