Hi, my name is Mike. I've got a '98 S70 GTL with 182,000 miles. Got it cheap, no rust, some minor tune-up. I spent nearly 2 hours yesterday reading threads on this site. Wow, some of you guys have some interesting problems but this is my first Volvo and I'm impressed. I followed some advice about front pads from MadeinJapan I think, squeel right before stopping. Spread some anti-squeel compound on contact areas but didn't help much. I've got grooved rotors and was wondering if AutoZone or the like carried a decent pad for this car, and best place for OEM plugwires.

Welcome to MVS. You really should use OEM pads unless you don't care about the squeak. Otherwise, bed them in good. After you get them in place (with backing grease) stomp on your brakes going at least 60mph, but don't come to a complete stop. Do this with a minute or two interval between stomps to let the brakes cool down...do it 7 or 8 times... should help your pads adjust to the grooves and hopefully the squeal will disappear. That said, best not to turn the rotors on your Volvo...they just become thin and are prone to warping. AutoZone, et. al. won't have your wires- and Volvo's are very picky about ignition wires. In my opinion, the only ones to use are made by Bougicord- other ingintion parts- rotor, cap are best to go with Bosch (OEM for Volvo on these). All of these parts are available at www.fcpgroton.com and right now, if you put "frosty" in at checkout you'll get 10% discount. While you're at it, buy some Mann oil filters and some aluminum drain plug washers too! Good luck and congrats on your Volvo!
