95 OBD I diagnostic tool

Post by d2medic »

I'm looking for advice on a good OBD I & II diagnostic tool that I can use for a 95 850, a 99 S70 and an 02 Crosscountry. Any good suggestions???

The earlier car you mention has the diagnostic boxes under the hood and you'll not need any tool- actually, more information and functionality from the built-in boxes. On later models, really, any OBD-II compliant scan tool will work fine- you're not going to be able to read Volvo specific codes anyway. I personally have an Equus Innova 3100 tool....they're pretty cheap on eBay now. For the cars you mentions, you won't need CAN Bus compatibility, so if you find other scan tools that can also read CAN, you'll probably pay more ffor the. From model year '05, all Volvo's became CAN bus dependent, so just take your pick (tools that can scan CAN can also scan earlier types of networks). If you will be using CAN, then by all means, make sure that it is mentioned in the description of the tool. eBay seems to be a good place for all scan tools at decent prices (where I got mine), but even the cheap $30-40 tools (no CAN bus) from Harbor Freight have a decent reputation here.
