Time for New Coil Springs?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Time for New Coil Springs?

Post by anelson52 »

I have a 2000 S80 T6 that is just about to roll over 140k miles. I am preparing to change struts/shocks as well as spring seats. Any advice on other important parts to check/change out while I've got everything apart? Also, is it time to change the coil springs or will they last awhile longer? If it's time to change the springs, what's the word on lowering springs? I'm not sure I want to go this route, but they seem to be cheaper than OEM springs I've priced.

Thanks!

Springs usually last longer. You can tell when they fail- your car will sag.

Appreciate the feedback MIJ. What about lower control arms/replacing the bushings? I've read a couple of posts that say it's tough and requires special tools. I've also read a post on another site that said you can do it by 'traditional' means. Any thoughts or advice?

Does your car make strange sounds out of its suspension? Wander on the highway? Just don't change things unecessarily. There are two ways to deal with the control arms- 1. You can use a press and push out the old bushings and install new bushings or 2. You can just change out the entire control arm (probably what would be called more traditional). If you can get a good deal on the total arms, it would be less hassle, but don't buy them just because they're cheap. ScanTech parts for instance are known for being inexpensive, but they are also known to fail quickly.

So far no strange noises or wandering. When I jacked the front end up the other day to check things prior to ordering struts, etc. it looked like the rear bushing on the driver side might be torn. I could see what looked like the aluminum center that the bolt runs through. I haven't had it on the road much due to the holidays, but will be going back to work Monday, so I'll listen for any noises. RockAuto.com sells a LCA from Dorman, are you familiar with them? They seem to be the least expensive ($128 each). Thanks!

I would go with Volvo OEM if it were my car but the choice is up to you.
Just DON'T use Scantech form Groton
