Hi everybody!
A new here...just find this forum and decided to register....happen that I got my daily driver totaled due to a rear end accident...

So I always liked Volvos and I think now is my time! I've found a 96 850 Turbo with 124K miles in a local dealer, asking $4900. It looks nice, body and paint is nice and shiny, clean engine, good tires and nice wheels. Took it to a test drive and drives nice, good brakes, air etc. Pulls like a beast! The only bad thing I could notice was the leather in the driver seat and in the middle rear.
Any advice in where to look at this cars, known problems? Tips?

The mileage and price sound about right for a `96. I have heard the high pressure turbos are more reliable than the low pressure because the former has an intercooler.

Looking at the repair how-to section of this site will give you an idea of maintenance areas. Try to find out if the timing belt was replaced on schedule at 70k. There might be a sticker on the T-belt cover denoting that. Best case scenario would be to obtain the maintenance records. When I bought my`96 I looked in the glove box and found a receipt that identified the former owner and called them before buying.

By the way, I had bad front leather in mine. I got some nice leather covers off ebay from a wrecking yard up in MN and changed them out myself. It was a little labor intensive, but the result was great for a total cost of $300.

It would be a good idea to change all fluids if you get it, as people thinking of trading up usually neglect maintenance in the last year. Good luck.
