Ive recently purchased a 2001 V40 1.6 SE, so far ive been very impressed with the build quality and reliability. In the last month or two ive been tinkering away fixing a few niggles.
The driver side headlight wiper arm/unit is faulty in so far as the washer hose has broken off the arm unit, and the arm unit itself is in pretty poor condition. I had proposed to replace the entire washer arm, after picking up a replacement second hand arm. However, i have very little info on how to go about removing and replacing the wiper arm, has anyone done this before or has any info?

To remove the old wiper arm push the cover at the wiper arm mounting to one side to expose the nut. Slacken the nut two or three turns only to protect the threads on the spindle. Use a pipe wrench to press the arm off - one leg of the wrench behind the arm and the other on the nut. Remove the nut, the arm and the washer hose.
Before putting the new arm on the spindle run the wiper motor to make sure it is parked in the correct place.
Install the washer hose, the wiper arm and the nut. On the driver's side make sure that the arm is above the stop when fitting it.
Test the wiper/washer and ensure that the wiper parks in a horizontal position.

Thanks for your very helpful instructions Bill, this will be alot of help once i get the time to order up the part.
Got another quick question, in about 4'000 miles the car will have done 90k, im thinking it'll be time for a new timing belt, but is there anything else i should be getting replaced at this stage, if it hasnt already been done or checked?

UK models timing belt change is at 90,000 or 8 years as opposed to the US models at 105,000.
It is recommended that the tensioner be changed at the same time.
Check the general condition of other components in the camshaft drive such as pulleys and other ancillary components driven by the timing belt, typically the water pump. They should be sound enough to ensure that the life of the replacement belt will not be affected.

Thanks alot, really appreciate all your advice and help. I really only bought the car as a run around, but ive become quite attached to it, no frills motor that seems to just do the simple stuff well. Hopefully plenty of Volvo miles ahead
