93 850 GLT will not start.

Post by Carbon15 »

It had 214,000 on it when the odometer gear went, probably about 220 on it now. I did an ignition tune up on it last summer. I’ve replaced the fuel injector relay, as I knew it was going anyway, this did not help. I’m getting spark to the plugs, not sure if it’s enough, but it’s there. I popped the fuel pump access panel off, but I can’t hear the pump, should I be able too? I’ve sprayed starter fluid into the intake; engine will not attempt to catch. I don’t want to start throwing components at this car as I’ve already spent a bunch of money on it and don’t want to throw any more away. The car ran fine when I parked it, but would not start up the next day. Any ideas of what I should look for?

Also after looking at something else on this forum, I went to check a few things. I found that I did not have a fuse in slot two, is this because it's injected? I did not get much fuel out of the scraeder valve on the fuel rail.

You should hear something from your pump when you turn the key to position II. It'll run until pressure is built up in you fuel lines. If thats not it, I would look at your plugs and distributer cap for condition. If they are in bad shape,It would be worth replacing.

With the key in the run position, I get a little spray of fuel as I hit the Schroeder valve, I was expecting more. I’m also wondering why there is no fuse in slot two on my panel that would be fuel pump according to the list.

I had the same problem with my 93 850 glt, except sometimes it would startand sometimes it wouldn't. you nee to pull the fuel pump, fashion some jumpers out of wire and test using 12 volts, be careful as there will still be gas in the pump. it takes a while but after testing mine a couple of time it did stop and would not re-start....replaced the pump ....been going strone ever since......

Smack the gas tank really hard with a ball bat...if your car starts then, you know your fuel pump is on its way out. The idle air control humming is normal.

Would it be easier to just tap the pump since I have the acces panel off? I'ts really beginning to sound like it's the pump. But wouldn't starter fluid have gotten it to kick over a little bit?

If your carefull you can probably remover the old pump attach some old hoses and the existing electrical connector, have a helper turn the key, again as the pump goes out it may work intermitenly.....what ever you do be carefull you are dealing with gas.......remover the pump completely if you can...if your pressure at the schrader valve is nothing but a little spurt....expect the fuel pump..............

I'm going to cut out of work early tomorrow and pull the pump, thank god there's an access panel and I don't have to drop the tank. I can't express how much fun it was for me last spring when I replaced my rotted tank mounting straps. Especially after the spot weld of the forward mounting bolts broke and I had to cut it off. At least I was able to pull the seat and go in through an access panel to replace the bolt. I've already made an adapter that I can plug into the cigarette lighter and connect the fuel pump to. Hopefull this is it, and I can replace the pump for 128.00. Speaking of which, any feedback on the Hella Pump, or partsgeek.com?
