Crankcase Gasket replacement on '96 850

Post by sholder »

Recently was told that the crankcase was leaking oil and the gasket had to be replaced. Cost was over $900cdn., does this sound reasonable or out of whack? Appreciate any incite as to why.
Thanks,
Simon :?

It's rare to hear of the crankcase leaking on an 850. If this car is a turbo, check that for leaks (much more common) as it can run down and give the appearance of the case leaking.

If you want to find out the real reason, you're going to have to get under the 850 and find out. Wipe down, drive, inspect. Repeat if necessary. If the leak is coming from the oil return line, post back and I'll detail what you need to do. It's an easy fix.

Also, you can spray down the motor and install some dye into the oil, drive car and use a black light to find out exactly where the oil is coming from.
I have a mechanic friend so I was able to use his dye and light. It worked like a champ. I found my Turbo return line leaking (fixed that) and rear main seal leaking (have not fixed yet, putting off, hopeing it will magically fix itself).
