How to test Ignition coils 2000 XC turbo

Post by ushman »

I think I may have an issue with ignition coil(s). Car started running rough and got much worse after going through a deep puddle. How do I test the individual plug coils? Other suggestions as to what the issue may be?

Welcome to MVS. How many miles do you have on your XC? Have you had any recent work done on her? Before you go to all of this, it would be much better to have your diagnostic trouble codes read with a scan tool from your OBD-II scan port (located under the center console arm rest). This will point you to a more specific cause than just a guess. And, yes, you'll get codes even without a CEL (check engine light) illuminating. Many auto parts stores including AutoZone will do this for you for free. Read the codes and post them back and let's go from there. Symptoms like stumbling or missing can be a multitude of issues (ETM, TCV, CPS, MAF, ect.) that are hard to define without the codes. If you narrow things down to the coil packs, here is a good write up on another site on how to test them (can be dangerous- do it very carefully): http://autorepair.about.com/od/troubles ... manual.htm I should also say that if it's been awhile since you've replaced spark plugs, this in itself could be your issue. Replace spark plugs with Volvo's or you can go with Bosch Copper cores (Yes, the cheap ones), but our cars hate the platinum plugs, and do poorly with them, so be aware of this.
Good luck and let us know what's up.

Thanks!

There are 122k miles and I do not know the history. The check engine light is on. We did have a new drive shaft installed, partially covered by extended insurance. My guess is that it has not been well maintained. I will do what I can but am trying to limit exspense, one step at a time.

Changed the plugs but runs the same. It is very rough and seems like it is misfireing, consistant. Closest Autozone is about 15 miles and I do not want to drive it that far at this point, so I will check the coils. Will I be able to tell looking at the plug, since they are new and I can idle? Will do that and then go the next step of taking it to get the codes.

Can you suggest a link with instructions for a general tuneup? Other suggestions welcome!

General tune up for your car (because most things are computer managed) include new plugs gapped at 0.028 inches (check this- very important as is NOT using platinum plugs) as well as new air filter...new oil, transmission flush and I guess that's about it. Earlier cars would also replace the wires, rotor and cap (but your car doesn't have these). Btw you can buy a code reader that will do everything you need for your car from Harbor Freght for $40 if you want to get one and read your codes at home...either this or, with a refundable deposit AutoZone will "lend" one to you.

I was careful about the gap, and stayed away from the platinum plugs, thanks for that I would have assumed platinum. That will be $40 well spent on the code reader. Will take the next step and let you know.
Appreciate you help.
